I was messing around with Maya, and since Im new (I hope people are getting that i am a newbie to this) i was wondering if the way everyone shapes polygons is by using the split polygons tool, it seems useful to me but Im not sure if im using it correctly.

Split Polygon Tool is the standard way to go as far as cutting and shaping polys in maya. There is also the subdivide, but this is rarely useful for shaping purposes, and the more useful extrude which is great for lateral extrusions as well as making holes like eye sockets, nostrils, etc.

It is worth mentioning that Maya has released a bunch of new game tool plugs (I think it's silly they're called game tools since almost all Maya users could benefit from them) that have more useful poly tool such as Drawsplit which mimicks the Knife tool in other apps but it way more powerful, Face split, edgeloop select etc...

On a positive note, the Split Polygon Tool has a lot of settings that add a lot of power to it such as the snapping magnets, subdivide options so use them to do your best work and take care 4 now :)
