I've decided to use KOryH's most excellent 2d entry as the basis of my 3d one. You can see his entry here (http://www.cgtalk.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=8451), and while I don't think my work will be on the same level of quality, I'll give it my best shot! Thanks to KOryH of course for letting me use his entry as concept art for mine!

I've gotten the basics down, terrain and some of the atmosphere, but there's a ton of work to be done still. Textures are pretty much rough and temporary, although I think the water material is decent already (more transparent, perhaps?).

Looking good, man. Looks like you're going to try hard to do justice to Koryh's work. Keep it up.

One thing to look at is where the roots enter the ground. Make the ground where the big roots enter the ground look as if they've displaced the soil around the root. You can accomplish this effect by creating some overlap in the terrain and the roots. As it is now, it looks as if they're just ending in the hillside and creekbed because there doesn't seem to have been any interaction within the soil itself.

Keep it up!

Yeah, that definitely needs to be done, but it's going to be fun working with the ground mesh. My computer is pitiful

Thanks for the input!

hehehe I mean this nicely timothy :D but I'm going to be super critical of this piece 'cause I love  the original 2D work. :D

Be as critical as you wish, it'll drive me to work harder :drumrock: :airguitar

Just a little update... some of the elements (grass, vines, part of glowing thing) are painted in temporarily. Still getting a feel for this piece..

one thing that's bugging me is the land behind (in Z-direction) the stone ring. It seemed to me that the land was flatter and the large hill thing in the background was actually a rock shelf. You have it modeled more like a hill in the ground rather than a large piece of rock protruding from the ground. hehehe told ya I'd be a picky bastard :D

As far as the piece overall: I think you really have the "ambiance" of the original nailed. The overall feel is very much like the 2D piece. :applause:

I know exactly what you mean. Notice, though, that the land isn't much higher than it is in KOryH's image; there will indeed be a rock shelf on top of it. Good call, though :wip:

Considering Koryhs entry, this entry has great potential!
pretty cool to see it come live in 3d aswell.

Anyway, one thing that i could drop some base on is the textures
im not sure if these are the final or just basics so we have some colors. But you can work it out better.

The groundtexture should be like mulchish or similar, if you know what i mean, if your going to have grass and such, and add bump and more displace ontop, it would probably take the scene to another level! :)

will be great to see this develop

*leaves an eye in the room before exiting*
gonna keep an eye on this ;)

The textures are far from being complete, they're pretty much just there to give the objects some color and texture. I won't start texturing for real for a good while yet.

I'm going to have to work out something for grass, I wish I had shag... but I've got a few ideas and I'll find one that works.

Thanks! :bounce:

Oh god, it's that ZrO jerk again
LOL
I like the size of the big rock ledge as you have it, but right now it looks too "weathered" and smooth. The original has that rock as very angular and layered. Like a projection of a bunch of slate stone. I'd say more like a bunch of stacked rectangles rather than anything organic.

I know, I know...relax it IS a wip... :p

Don't go away, I need your criticism! :p

I agree on the ledge, but for now, I'm going to bed... might as well update though:

No new crits this time I just wanted to say that with every new update you post your piece is looking more and more like the original. I just want to say that I think you are doing a really good job with it. :applause: :applause: :applause:

Now that made my day, and made the five hours I just spent trying to sort out problems with grass worthwhile :p

Update. Now with grass, I just have to make the grass go in the right spots. And it's not a good thing that the grass is composed of 700 000 polygons :surprised

1st, i'm envy cos you got to use such a great idea. Second, crit!! (ihihihi)

Well, as you have already said, the textures are not even near to finished, so I wont really crit there. The model though,

-I would suggest looking up a small technique by henry (in cg-talk) that explains how you can create very nice-looking grass using modelling tools. The technique is VERY effective, and VERY fast. here (http://www.cgtalk.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=7845&highlight=henry+grass)

-The piece of land that you were trying to define with ZrO-1, i believe its rocky ground, that has chipped off underneath, and has plenty of soil ontop. Also, on the edge, it has a tilt upwards, not downwards. [i think it looks nicer like dat]

-I sense that the landscape is.....missing in the background? Too much fog atm.

-Watch it with the rock cycle. They look like gravestones, whereas in koryh's they have different thicknesses, there is quite a diversity, which makes it look more natural.

Excellent comments! First off, although the grass method looks promising, it still requires just about as many polys and takes just as long. I think I'm fine with Scatter for now...

Secondly, thanks for the crit on the rocky part. I'll definitely change it as you suggest, as right now it's not very like the one in KOryH's piece. Thirdly, yes, I hid some of the terrain in the back to improve rendertimes. It'll be there in later WIPs. And lastly, comment duly noted for the circle of stones; they'll be more like KOryH's in the next version. Thanks for the input :)

Arrrgghhh,
I am sure I would love this for obvious reasons, but I can't see the images

I finally saw the picture!
great job so far!
