Greetings to all. I have been on this web site for a short while now, and I am blow away with the artwork the people on here create. With that said, I am very reluctant to call myself a graphic designer, but that is what I am labeled. I am self taught, and have been learning for the last 10 years. I am 32 years old and want to know what you all think.
I have been wanting to go to school for the last five years, but i feel i am to impatient for school. I feel I have gone as far as I can go by myself, and am really curious as to how alot of these pieces of digital art are created. I have had my own "Graphic Design" Company for about 5 years now.
Is school really the way i should go, or is there faster programs for someone like me? I have seen what some of these students coming out of college are creating and I am wondering what they were taught. I have been turned down for jobs around here. Because I do not have my degree, but when I see the jobs that were created by people with degrees that came out of the local college, I think to myself, "Did I miss something?"
All I want is a little respect and some insight how some of the kick ass art is done, or is that all having to do with the eye of the beholder.
I have done DVD covers, CD covers, countless logos, countless t-shirt designs, business cards blah blah blah. Will a degree, make me a little more money, or should I just go to some of the pricey seminars that are offered thru Adobe? Any advise would help, especially from an insider.

hey razorsharpdesign whats up bro
well im not a graphic designer by any means but a certificate or degree could help you a little bit but at the end your actual skill and experience will be more of a factor
tried to look at your website but page is dead so cant really estimate your skill level but every artist should strive at being better anyways i am constantly learning every day
you should check some dvd's over at gnomon workshop
and dotn be affraid to expand maybe you should check out compositing who kows you might find something you like and if you know more tools youll b more flexible you could apply at different kinds of companies
you can see little clips of the dvd before you buy it so it gives u an idea
You should revamp your cv and make yourself look like the best choice EVER lol
do a nice portfolio of your work a nice cover letter and cv and writte some of those contracts u got and just shoot them out their at same time your learning your dvds its 70 bucks and ull probably learn more than the adobe seminar

Its perfectly possible to be self thought, even though this industry is evolving at lightning speed.

Most of the great CG artists are self thought since a few years ago there were almost no schools for 3D animation.


You say you are pretty impatient... You have to keep in mind that if you want to be a good artist you have to have good patience and selfcontrol. Also, wether go to a specialised school or go to the selfthought route it is going to take relatively some time to learn. Your graphic design skills and experience will surely come in handy though, so thats a little bit of less stuff to learn.
