Starting to put together a portfolio and I'm working on my basic lighting setup that i can place my scenes in to get a nice effect. Any points or tips are welcome. The image is more about the lighting than the object at this stage.

Any idea how i can get the funky lighting in the shadow away? Its caused by my rim light, but I have the light set to not cast light on anything but the jetpack. The jetpack does have a reflective shader on it, but I can't figure out how to disable the reflectiveness for just that one light so it would bounce off onto the floor.

For a start, use area lights, get nice soft shadows then, and way more interesting hilights.

Changed the spotlight to an area light as you suggested and I must agree, it looks much better. The graininess in on the fins at the bottom is most likely due to a too low number of shadow rays, though from memory i believe it set to like 50 :S Anyways, the reflection of the rim light worked out quite well in this image making it a bit more interesting at the bottom. The light might be a bit too yellow and I'll post an update in a bit

Edit: Added render with a whiter light

Personally I think the rim is a bit bright. It's blowing out to pure white. Also trying to figure out how the shadows from the nozzles casting on the fins are so sharp when everything else is smooth?

Those aren't shadows. The fins have a blinn and are just reflecting the nozzles. I could adjust the rim light a bit, but I kind of like it the way it is. I will make some tests to see how it is.
