View Full Version : Photometric lighting question (newbie)
CrackDown 10-13-2003, 12:07 PM Ok, I am fairly new to 3Ds max and am using version 5. I love using the photometric skylight as it makes everything in the scene look fairly photorealistic in terms of lighting. Should I be so attached to only using this light? I also have brazil renderer, which doesnt seem to like the skylight (doesnt render the light). I'm sure there is a way to get realistic lighting another way and not need to be dependant on this new feature in 3dsmax 5.
Any thoughts?
Thanks
(Remember, I'm new to this :) )

Enable skylight in Lume server tab in Rendering Options and you'll be ok with Brazil.
What I found out is that skylight doesn't really like bump maps.

Personaly, and I know I'm not alone on this, The photomeric lighting in MAX is useless and slow. Brazil or Vray is a better route.
In my experience in broadcast design, speed takes precidence over photorealism. I"ve had many situations that I would much rather light my scene using GI but have been forced to get things finished by 8am tomarrow and must therefore find a new way to light my scene using more traditional lighting tequniques. I often render out a single frame using vray. Then I go back and light my scene using omni arrays and colored lights to try and match the very expensive GI lighting.
So yes, being dependant on a physicaly correct lighting system like the crappy on in MAX5, vray or Brazil, to name a few, is a bad thing. Go find some tutorials on light arrays and faking radiocity and GI. learn all u can and then decide which solution to use.
