Hey all, been lurking around this forum for a while, and finally I have some spare time to give a good go at one of these challenges. Thanks to everyone who has posted around here, all of the work has been really inspirational.:wavey:

Anyway, for my entry i've decided to do an abandoned cathedral, destroyed by the forest. Below is a pretty sad looking concept pic, hopefully in communicates what i'm shooting for. The composition is bad but "that'll be fixed in post".

Above is a tiny pic that i'm using for general colour and form. Below is pic of some initial work i've been doing. I'm not happy with the mixture of geometry at the moment, so some components with be changed. This is btw, the very top of the central tower.

I like the jungle temple idea it should be cool. Best of luck!

--- UPDATE ---

Got majorly side tracked and started adding details and changing the style. What started out being the top, will now be the entire tower. I sorta ended up with a Gothic/Neo-Classical/Aztec look... i think i might texture it up with some nice tribal themed textures.

The actual decay and destruction will come later, after i've finalized the complete design. The parts at the bottom are just stand-ins and will be replaced by more complex columns in the near future. As well, a few objects need to be added to the top.

Tell me what you think! :bounce:

WOW man, very nicely detailed model. I can't imagine what the rest of the temple will look like. Great stuff!

Hi, like the idea. But why does it have to look sad? Forgotten jungle ruins can have something special, positively magical. Well, right - yes - enchanted. :)

I prefer friendly ruins ;)

honda: I just meant that the concept pic wasn't very good. Although I was planning on possibly having a gravesite nearby, the ruins will otherwise look friendly. :) Thanks for your interest.

--- UPDATE ---

This is probably the last time i'll update today... I have some lawn work to get done up.

Being my usual indecisive self, i've changed my mind. I've decided to once again make this just the top of the tower. I'm not sure if i'll have time to texture it all once i'm done, but i'll certainly try. Below is the complete tower top.

Oh dang!
if youv worked in that much detail in that little piece, i cant wait to see the whole building! great work mate

Man, that's a lot of work ahead of you. One good thing about doing all of that goregously complex modeling is that you'll be able to use really simlified textures. Like I said earlier, the modeling looks great! Keep up the good work.

Great detail, nothing really to crit here! Like Zr0 said texturing should be rather simple because of the detail. keep it comin!

--- UPDATE ---

Yet another update. Today I spent most of my time exporting the NURBS surfaces from Rhino to Max... to say the least, Max does not handle displaying NURBS very efficiently. Below is a Brazil render of the upper part of the cathedral's main tower, hope to do some more modeling tonight, and get this main tower complete in the next day or so.

If anyone here has used Rhino and has any good tips for optimizing exportation, please drop me an e-mail. Also there is a bizarre anomoly in where the top of the tower meets the middle section, it looks like a plane sticking out... this isn't in the Rhino file and only shows up when i rendered, this is gonna be fixed.

Thanks to everyone above for their kind comments. C&C are always welcome! :)

Yeah I see that plane you're talking about. Could it be a planar trimmed surface that lost it's trim curve? (I'm using Maya speak). Oh, or maybe you put a ground plane into one of the scenes for a test render and it was hidden but not deleted?

Even though, your tower is looking rediculously great. I really love the attention to detail you're modeling into this bad-boy. :applause:

How do you find Rhino to work with, and is it only powerful in NURBS or good for polygonal modelling too? what about texturing and animation?

Good job so far on your design...coming along nicely. :-)

Looks great. Can't wait to see it completed.:)

Just wanna wanna say that I'm really impressed by your work so far and if this is the way you'll finish your work then it will be great!!!

...damn that detail... anyway, keep it coming!

@ mike11: I've only had the oportunaty to use Rino once but from what I've heard about it it's a NURBS only app.

--- UPDATE ---

Well I finished more work early this morning, but was too exhausted to post it. I decided to make horizontal rings that repeat around the dome, however the problem comes where they intersect, because the surfaces aren't perfectly aligned. As you see below, when its rendered it doesn't look very good.

So i decided to make covers and will eventually trim away the surface underneath. But i'm not sure if i'm liking the way they're looking, i could always add more detailing to each, but I wanted to wait to see if i like the in the first place.

Any suggestions on what I should do?? Note: the seams in the picture below have been darkened and contrast was increased to make them more apparent.

--------------

Thanks once again for all the possitive feedback... it really does make it all worth it.

Mikey11: Rhino is a NURBS package, however you can convert them into polygon surfaces as well. It's easily more powerful than max's nurbs, and because it has so many exporting option, it can work alongside almost any app. Rhino doesn't do any animating, and does not have the greatest of texturing features. Its really created to be an application for product design, so it has all the precision tools to make very acurate surfaces, but is still very servicible for doing other tasks like character work. Check out the site (http://www.rhino3d.com) for more specific details. Its really quick and intuitive once you get used to the interface and understand how nurbs work.

awesome model the surfaces will be a whiz, which by the way I can't wait to see. Is the polycount killin ya yet?

I see what you mean about the alignment with the rings. The big blocks aren't a bad idea, but maybe use a different object to cover the intersections. Maybe something like those awesome button medallions with the cross shapes on them down towards the bottom of the big dome. The blocks don't really work for me (hehehe like it matters :p ).

One other thing: Have you tried intersecting/trimming the intersections of the rings and the verticle bars one way or the other? Maybe trimming the right one would do the trick.

Just a couple of suggestions. I really like it either way you go.

---UPDATE---

Finally I've finished some more... the past problem gave me a lot of grief, but I stumbled upon a really awesome reference pic. I decided to add windows instead. I removed the large horizontal bands, and completed the windows, however, the dome needs some more horizontal detail. I plan on adding some as soon as I think up how to incorporate it.

The rest of the tower is fairly simple. Once done, it will be composited into a photo from somewhere in my parents garden. Not sure if the texture work will be completed though... I might be forced to slap on a simple procedural plaster material for the time.

Anyway the pic is below, let me know what you think.

Adam Klein --- Thanks. Yes, thankfully i'll be upgrading my computer from 733mhz P3, 256mb RAM, GeForce2 MX to a 2.0ghz P4, 512mb+ RAM, GeForce4 Ti4600... That'll all happen once I secure a summer job.

Zr0-1 --- Yeah, I just decided to scrap THOSE horizontal bars... since the vertical ones grow in size, trimming would be a nightmare. I'm going to add new horizontal rings, this time, smaller, and rounder and hopefully they'lll intergrate much cleaner, while still adding interest.

:bounce: --- MAJOR UPDATE --- :bounce:

Well its finally done... few... I had to have it finished for a seperate little competition i'm entering (edit: actually its quite a major competition)... so I don't think this will be officially entered into this challenge, but i'd thought i'd keep y'all updated on the progress as I work to take this model and create a final image...

Just bought a nice little digital camera, so i've been taking some pics to make a Photoshop based composition, and then maybe throw it into Combustion in the Fall and animate a camera move. I'll post a pic of this work in a few days.

Anyway below is a pic of the final model. When i tried to export it from Rhino I was easily topping the 3 million poly mark (bear in mind that Rhino doesn't seem to optimize its poly output very well). Trying to open the .igs file in Max took around 3 hours on my P3 733, 256m ram computer.

Love to hear any comments or suggestions... Thanks!

--- UPDATE ---

Finally things are starting to come together. Below is a rough composite of the building and scene. All the houses in the forground will be covered with trees. I plan on extending the forest back further. All of the mattes will be cleaned up and colours corrected.
