Oh, cool, so you guys are doing that downstairs? I'll be there, and I hope some of you say hi. (Except Anm8 who is going to get chopped up by the fans in the ventilation system.)
From the sound of it, you might want to get there early to make sure you get in.

Jeremy, your lighting book with fred kruger on the front is great! I did not know you posted here! Your book is thick enough to stop the fans, then I will be safe! :) I have never met you but I will say hi if I see you! Talk to you later!

living on the east coast is so unfair. a once in a lifetime opportunity to goto pixar, and u don't even need to be an employee :(. U'all are extremely lucky.
Have a great time! Make sure you wear your hawaiian shirt, and maybe John Lasseter will say "Hey man, nice shirt" :buttrock:

they all got badges and its pretty tightly sealed off. there is a gate checkin and probably one once you get inside or something as well.
hehehe they stopped doing tours a long time back. people would come in and just wander off :)

There is also security on bikes and the reception. You won't get past the reception unless you signed up (same thing happened at the VES 2002 reception). And all doors to the offices will be locked at that time.
But it'll be nice. Tere's the lunch area and game rom and around the main area on the second floor you can see Jan Pinkava's sculptures (gorgeous) and the awards for example.

I don't live in Chiron but near it. actually i'm not that close to Chiron. Pixar is much much closer to the Chiron office than I am. I think they probably felt the blasts when it happened.
Chiron doesn't have their research facilities here. It probably isn't that stupid enough. Its probably mostly their corporate offices. The research labs are probably hidden away somewhere in a warehouse somewhere. no biotech company has their research or manufacturing facilities in a location that accessible to the public.
The day has arrived....6 hours and counting!!!!

Yeah, it sucks that so many people got turned away.
It was pretty cool. They fed us pasta and then the presentation took place in Pixar's awesome little theater.
ILM talked about 3 specific shots mainly: The Termanatrix melting on the prticle accelerator, the shot of Gov. Arnie getting out of the chopper with only half a body, and the nuclear mushroom cloud explosions. The funny part was that they barely mentioned Maya.
Pixar talked about how they use maya for modelling, and how they begin writing shaders with it, and how they use it for particle effects. They had lots of flow charts on how it was integrated into their production pipeline.
On top of that, the authors of "Inside Maya 5" talked about the Maya production that they did for the book, and then someone gave a presentation on paint effects and parent constraints.

Yeah the working enviroment seems great, they have art up everywhere. Their theater has a bunch of stars on the ceiling after the lights go out (and even a couple shooting stars if you look long enough) and the sound system and digital projection are incredible. Even the seats were comfy.

There was a guy there who said he flew in from Arizona (or was it Oregon - something like that) for the event, was staying one night in SF then flying home. That really impressed me.
But it seems as if most of the "usual" attendees for a Maya UG were missing this time, mainly because they feared they'd get turned away if they didn't leave work in mid-afternoon in order to get here early and stand in line. As a result, the crowd was almost all students and hobbyists, plus a few pixar employees of course.
Sorry so many people were turned away. It did seem that names had been checked and people had their printed nametags on, so I think security did it's job very well last night; I had never seen Pixar security out in such full force.
