View Full Version : question about rigging and dynamics ...

Hi everyone :)
I have a character that have low poly hair that is rigged (with bones and smooth binding), and now I want to apply dynamics to her hair like if there were wind or something.
can someone please tell me whats the step by step procedure to apply dynamics to the bones of the rigging ? I just can't find how this is done.
Thanks in advance :)

You could try starting by trying to use hair dynamics to drive the bones. I found a small tutorial on hair dynamics.
Another option would be try using nCloth, but that could be more or less problematic then the hair approach.

thanks for the link, this could do it, but isn't there a simpler approche ?
with this solution you have to create the curves and ik spline curve ect., this is simple but I'll have to do it for all the stands in my low poly hair, isnt there a simpler solution for applying the dynamics directly on the bones ?

If you want dynamic, you will have to work. I remember complaining once about a job that required a lot of dynamic hairs, i didnt think twice about writing a script that build a dynamic curve on top of my existing rigs, took me 2 days to get it done with a nice GUI and integration with my rigs, but saved me a weeks work of a painfull (automated) process. Too bad it is not with me right now.
You could try seaching highend3d.com, im pretty sure it has a lot of scripts that would automate that process for you.

ok, thanks for the info, I'll check that link, too bad there in not an official way integrated in Maya...

Im not saying this is the only or best way! Dont get me wrong. There could be simpler or better options. But since you said they where rigged already, my best opinion would be a dynamic hair system. They are not that bad to set up really, creation could be a lot more optimized (and a lot less steps to be done), but hey, it's maya...
Have a look here

you can use several things, including soft bodies if you don't do hair (i have a 2009 complete, I don't think it does)
here's an example using bones only + softparticles: http://mlkdesign.online.fr/dump/hair.ma 2009,ma
