I using purely GI with no lights to render, but it seems the tables and chairs are missing their shadows. The mirror's shadow is good though.. I am also using ambient occlusion.

your image is too small and dark to decifer anything. it does kinda look like they have ao though.

Since the light is coming from the right any shadows produced would be on the left wall we can't see. Also the intensity of the over all lighting is so low and the objects so far away from the surfaces that i doubt you will be able to see defined shadows using GI.

The best advice I would give when lighting a scene is to think like a film DOP and use all of C4D's lighting tools to get an aesthetic image. A mix of shadow casting area lights, non shadow casting fill lights and GI for that sprinkle of realism.

GI should be seen as another tool to achieve your goal but not the be all and end all lighting simulator.

I thought I'd throw that in as I see a lot of people trying to do everything with IBL or GI when a mix of lighting techniques is almost always preferable.

Personally I agree with Guy's post.

That said, change the illumination mode in your luminance materials to QMC or per pixel. Anytime the illuminator is really small you have to use these two modes to get any decent definition and reduce high contrast sample artifacts.
