Just to make things a little bit clearer.

http://www.machinery.dk/images/profile.gif

The 2 profiles (1,2) is two ep curves closed with "close curve"

now when I try to make a patch from (1,2,a,b) the patch goes through d and c instead of just going from a to b. What am I doing wrong, it's like the space between a and b dosn't exist.

B.t.w. when I try to create a patch for the forehead, it connects itself to the lower part of curve 1 ??

what is that? front view? top view?

can you give me a screen grab of the actual model?

maybe you need to detach the curve so that it doesnt carry on past the other rails and then bi-rail from that
