Hi everybody, I'm Maurizio and this is my very first post on CGSociety!
This is the job I did for a University project, I'm using 3DS-max 2011 so I decided to model and animate a Phoenix that goes up in flames and flies away. Here the model i made since now:

I know this firts motel sucks, that's why i am here to ask you to express an opinion about that, and to give me some suggestion to make it better and better and better. Therefore this is my first model and I'm here for learning :)
Thanx everyone, I hope to get lots of responses from all of you guys. Bye ;)

whats your model sheet look like, alot of the time, if you sheet is bad you model is also bad... ( But its still a good try). Try something simpler, try doing a human face (based on a real human), or a simple room. Animals are a bit too organic for a perfect first try.

Also add more detail in your texture, bump map, specular, normals and Light it!

Good Luck

Well, the point is there's no sheet reference (that would have been VERY useful)... I used some pictures and images taken from the web and i merged them into something that looks like.... a penguin :)
I made some ardjustment to the model and I added some feathers and stuff like that... I would like it to be similiar to the image suggested by you (I mean more like a peacock) but i still can't find useful images to use as base. Finally I wouldn't change my project cause I spent so much time on it and now it's a personal war :)
Here the new bird:

I am "feathering" it up, it's a very complex thing to do but I'm trying to find my way.... I hope this project will cost me an A+ cause I'm spending so much time on it!
Hope to read any other opinion/suggestion

Cheers:thumbsup:!

Sorry I dont understand was this like an assingment that required no model sheet? or you couldnt find one? I strongly suggest you get one. Don't spend too much time with it, sometimes part of being a CG artist is learning how to let go and move on. That was my problem when I first started, but when time passed but I learned that I would spend less time redoing it than, well doing a MILLION adjustments...

With that said you should light it up, lighting can make all the diffrence.Oh yeah add some texture on the head,NOthing is ever a solid color.

Notice how nothing has a solid color.

This was a project to pass a course at the University: I chose this project cause I want to animate it and make it burn :) So this is a school project, it's not a professional thing so don't worry if it's not perfect, my project needs to be animated so even if it's not so "real" it's still cool :)
I had no model sheet and i didn't find one for me... i used as model a royal pheasant then I modified it to make it more like an heron cause the phoenix is a merge between the 2 birds.
I did not understand the lights thing... I'm using a default light for now cause I'm in the modeling and feathering phase.
My problem is to make the feathers of the face... I fear that putting feathers could mess the entire thing up...

Make a new base reference by drawing your own,or asking someone.

i suggest phoenix has big ribbons like tail.
