Hi there,

I posted this guy a while back in the WIP section. I finally got around to texturing him...and clothing him. He's relatively "low" poly at about 7000 polys and done in Maya. Oh, and I'm currently looking for work in the Vancouver area, so if interested, please feel free to send some my way! :)

Weird, it's working on my end. Anybody else having the same problem?

Doesn't work. Rename your photos in geocities with the extension .txt and you can remote link.

example.txt instead of example.jpg

hey thar!

first of all i think you have done a great job on the face ... captured the tough stubborn look... especially the light eyes :applause: ... great texturing colour.. love the kUlt!

one crit if you are interested.... maybe fix up his collar bone.. how it goes round into his shoulder.

good work though !

cool..
he looks like a he-man action figure:D

nice modeling but you should "relax" the muscles a bit, they're too hard (i don't know if you can understand what i mean)

and looks like the kilt is floating a lil bit..maybe if you give it some volume??

anyway...really nice image man:thumbsup:

keep up the good work

Hey man thats relly nice modeling and cool concept..

The only thing is that the kilt looks abit streched.
I agree on the part that the collar bone should fade out more in to the shoulder part, it could allmost end where the shoulder/neck starts.

Could we see some wires?

Man, I gotta' post stuff here more often. Thanks guys. Those are exactly the kind of critiques I was looking for. You touched on the same things I had my doubts too - the collarbone and the kilt especially. You just don't get the same kind of response from friends and family.

I also understand what you were saying about the muscles being too "hard". I suppose it's a stylistic choice in the end. I was actually going for the Comic book/action figure look as opposed to realism. I think if I were to smooth the model it might make the muscles less blocky, but since I was aiming this more at game companies, I was trying to keep the poly count down.

BTW - don't know if I mentioned it before, but this was my first real attempt at modeling/texturing a character - I'm just a recent student in 3d.

Here's a couple of wires (hope they're big enough).

upper body wire (http://www.geocities.com/one_sparky2004/Design/Scotsman7.html)

whole body wire (http://www.geocities.com/one_sparky2004/Design/Scotsman8.html)

Whoa this is one angry Scot. Is he going to participate in some wrestling championships? ;)

Nice modeling tough. But redo the texture. It looks a bit plastic at the moment. :p

Hmmm...do you think it's necessarily the texture or would it be the material properties causing that? I wasn't entirely satisfied with the flesh appearance to begin with. Do you think it's the specular values in particular that create the plastic look?

nice work so far but the torso looks a little out of proportion.

Out of proportion in which sense - too long or too short? I know when his kilt is on it tends to have a shortening effect as it's hiked up past his belly button. Also, many of the angles used are taken from lower down, and well, foreshortening obviously comes into play. Conversely, if you take a look at the whole body wire (posted above) taken from a slightly higher angle, it has the opposite effect (making his torso seem too long).

Do you think that could be the problem?

He looks very much inspired by the character from www.highpoly.de

Maybe a little too close for comfort. I suggest changing or adding some things to vary it and give it more of your own style.

Jesus! That's scary! The tartan's are similar too!

Oh well, what to do? I hadn't actually seen that before. In the end I suppose, any muscly guy wearing a kilt is going to be reminiscent of, well...any other muscly guy wearing a kilt. No offence, but I'm sure he wasn't the first guy to give his character a kilt and I'm sure I won't be the last. Nothing exactly groundbreaking there.

My character's physique was actually inspired by a Marvel character, and being Scottish myself, I decided the best thing for him to wear without concealing his musculature too much would naturally be a kilt.

As far as the boots go, have you seen traditional Scottish footwear that's to be worn with a kilt? Not exactly the most manly looking of footwear I can assure you. So instead, I just decided to model some of my old workboots I had sitting at home and voila, there you have it.

i really love this model ..... go the scots .... no chance of winning the world cup though :p

personally i like the action figure style...... i think it maybe looks like an action figure because it 'seems' like the texture has been painted darker at areas of definition such as the 6 pack......... this is what is done on some detailed figurines to creat the look of definition....... but it may also be the lighting thats doing this..... i think if you want the realistic look you should tweak your specular values some more.

some more cits on his physique if are interested.

as was said before you really need to flatten his shoulders from a front view .. it looks as if he is partially shrugging ... take a look at
this body shot (http://www.members.optusnet.com.au/alexanderbobin/images/muscles.jpeg) and you will see what i mean.

i think his deltoids extend too far down into the side of his upper arms... again look at the above pic.

its possible his lower biceps insert too low into the inside of his elbow ... maybe shorten them up juuuust abit.

i think his stomach muscles and obliques are too thick ... they protude almost as far as his pecs ... and it creats a kind of divide/canyon/valley between his lower pecs and upper 6 pac and obliques.

thats my two cents for now........ i crit so much cause i love your model and look forward to seeing it spic and span.

great dirty boots by the way ....... looks like his is ready for a wrestle in the mud or something........ have you considered giving the kilt a sporran ?

keep up the good work.

:applause:
