how do you render only specific objects at a time in cinema4d? is there an option like "use background" in maya?

Bunch of different ways:

-The 2 little dots to the right of the object name in the OM (top one is editor visibility, bottom one is render visibility).
-You could add them to a layer and turn off rendering for that layer.
-Adding a compositing tag (bit more complicated as you could have them invisible to the camera but still cast shadows, show in reflections, etc.).
-Display tag with visibility checked and percentage set to 0%.
-And probably a few other ways that I can't remember off the top of my head:)

Right click on an object in the OM, it's in the Cinema 4D tags sub-menu.

Layers can get a little complicated. Open up the help and search for "layer browser" for all the info on layers in c4d (that wasn't meant as a RTFM comment... I just don't feel like typing out all the relevant info lol).

Cheap smoke plugins? None... they're all pretty expensive... and all quite good. I personally use Dpit Effex. Full fluids/liquids plugin. Very cool but a bit pricey. There's also TurbulenceFD (formally Turbulence4D) and phyfluids (by remotion). Effex is the only one that currently has a liquids solver.

If you meant cheap plugins in general... mine's pretty cheap;) See my sig for the link. If you go the the c4dcafe they have a plugin database with links to a bunch of good plugins:)
