View Full Version : Character: Male - Semi Realistic
Ivars 10-11-2003, 10:10 PM Ok, I know this´ll be hard to crit. cause I´m going for a semi realistic look. But still I want it to be somewhat belivable.
It´s supposed to be a younger man, the classical good guy.
There´s not much yet, just a head. But I would like your input on this anyway. Anatomy, edgeloops, character.... anything really.

Looks pretty good, I would like to see a smooth verison. The toplogy"edgeloops" look good. The width of the nose seems bit thin towards the end given the thickness of the head and the brow could be a little more raised

Thanks for your reply. Here´s a smooth version. I´ve raised his brows, and widened his nose a bit. And some minor changes...

Looks much better.. still the shape of the end of the nose is very unusual.. I mean I don't think I have ever seen one quite like it?
Normal y I would expect the tip to be more of a bulb intead of sort up turning up a it does. Did you model this after facial feature of a real person?

No, this is straight out of my imagination. :)
I´ll look into that nose thing.....

Here´s a little update though. Started on his jacket today.

No, not really, I want the jacket to look like some kind of military jacket. So I took some ideas from a soviet uniform.

He's looking pretty good. although now his head looks to be a bit large for the body.
Also the fingers apear to be taller than they are wide. If you look straight down your finger it's basically square I would image those to be rectangular.
Drakaran
11-02-2003, 07:44 PM
the fingers look maybe a little too fat at the ends and the 2nd segment of the thumb is too long. I'm surprised at how low the polky rez is, my hands use about twice the amount of polys. I'm pretty impressed with the amont of detail you have for that amount of polys.

Thanks for your comment.
But I´m not sure I agree with you on the proportions. I may be wrong, but I think a person is supposed to be 7 heads high, this guy is infact even taller.....
http://www.popcom.nu/3d/MNS_Body_08.jpg
Maybe the hat makes his head look bigger :)
About his fingers I´ll look in to that.
Drakaran:
Thanks. Yes I noticed his thumb was too long, so I changed that, but there´s still some thing to be done I guess. Thanks for you help.

I think's maybe the width and depth of his head.. rather than the height of it that is making it look large.
It's also that the thickness of the neck would lend me to beleive that the head should be on a bulkier body and his overall physique is that of a thinner or younger man.

hmmmm, I´m still not entierly convinced, hehe.

I was thinking about it, and wondering how you plan on using this character. If you are gonna have dozens of these guys on a ship and the ship is the focus, you probably already have too much detail. In that case I would only have one high rez for close-ups and the rest would be pretty low rez. things like finger nails won't be seen in those kinda shots and just waste rendering cycles. If this character is the main focus, I'd keep going on the detail. On seeing the side view, I'd agree that the legs are too long, maybe too thin. Either way, the model is coming along nicely. good work!

Thank you guys.
Drakaran: This is one of the main characters for my movie-project.(that never will be completed) So there will only be one of these. I´ll look in to his legs a bit. You´re right they seem a little thin, and maybe a little long aswell.
AndyBa: Why do you think so?
Darklord101: ok, I see what you mean. But I´ll leave it as it is, untill I´ve added some hair to his head.

>>>I´ll look in to his legs a bit. You´re right they seem a little thin, and maybe a little long aswell.
I think this has a little bit to do with my comments on the head.. his head and neck make him look burly but then you look at his legs and they are spindly and thin.

He looks great. The proportions could seem a little strange because of that very short jacket and longer jumper. Does he need a hood and jacket? He might look like a bad guy because the soviets are always evil in the movies ;-)

Actually a normal's adult human height is about 7.5 heads.
And if you want to go for idealistic proportions it's about 8 heads high.

he's coming along great. he really got a personality and more life to him when you added the facial textures. love to see the eyes move in his head, or a morph to a smile.
Definitly keep both hood and jacket!

A well painted specular map would take away that plasticy looking sheen from the skin. I think it would also retain the "cartoon-like" look you seem to be going for. I really like how this is coming out. nice work.

Scary isn´t it?
thesightsmith: He does in fact have both a spec and a gloss map, But I´ll work harder on them and see what I come up with.
For now, I´ve changed the topolgy of the face to allow better deformation, and I also feel that it gives better definition to his facial features :) What do you guys think?

I would say his eyes need more depth to them and the eyebrows should be thicker. It looks a little girly to me right now. The rest of the face looks good to me tho.
Ivars
11-29-2003, 05:42 PM
hpslashluvr : Thanks. As for the eye´s I think I´ll keep em at the current depth, but I´ll change the eyebrows, you´re right about that.
Update:
I reworked the ears, and did some further changes on his face. I did this morph to try out the new mesh:

He definitely needs an upper eyelid.
I was going to say that just from the shots you've been showing, but in that animation it's especially clear-- you have him closing his eye by basically folding down a section of the flesh under his brow. There should be an actual eyelid, something thin that fits over the shape of his eyeball, and has a fold in it. Eyelids have very defined edges-- on your model, the eye seems to be just sitting in the face like it was pushed into clay. You've mostly fixed that on the lower lid-- now just do it to the upper. I wish I could give you some advice on how to animate it, since the lid must slide smoothly along the surface of the eyeball in a curve, but I don't know how to do that myself yet. He could also use a proper tear duct at the inner corner of the eye. Have some fun with it-- eyes are the best part!
After that, you'll probably want to fiddle with his ears a bit-- right now they're too small and look squished flat.
Also, glancing back through the thread, I see that his fingers appear to be missing a joint. There should be a short segment right behind the fingernail, then the main joint a little farther down, then the joint where they meet the hand, for a total of 3. Yours seem to have only 2, the last small joint at the tip missing.

to em the ears look a little small
Drakaran
11-30-2003, 09:17 AM
actually, the ear looks pretty proportional. generall the top of the ear is even with the eyebrow and the bottom of the ear lines up with the bottom of the nose. The is too far back on the head. it should attach about right in the middle of the side of the head.
the brow seems a bit too flat, you might look at it from a top-down view to check on that, and the chin seems a bit too small, that you need to pull the bottom down a bit more.
lookin good!
Ivars
11-30-2003, 05:29 PM
Wow, thanks for the useful crits.
Gnarly Cranium: You´re absolutley right about the eyelids. I was mainly using a mirror for reference, and my eyelids are sort of hidden behind my eyebrows, but they do show, especially when I close my eyes. So I´ll defenitly fix that.
About hte fingers I was just about to say "of course they have three joints, I´m not stupid!" but then I took a closer look... gaah, you´re right! I think there´s something with me and fingers... (it´s a long story)
Drakaran: You´ve got some good points there, I´ll move the ear, and fix his chin as well.
"the brow seems a bit too flat" How do you mean. I´m sorry but I don´t quite understand....
I´ll update with a new picture soon.
Thank you for your help!

I'm completely baffled that you managed to get the exact number of fingers right on every single hand! I mean I wouldn't comment on this if there weren't a prejudice for this (can you say like that) but am I right, or what? ;P
anyways, I agree with the eyelid, and just to be the complete pain in your arse (I promise, I will stop after this one) some lashes would be extremely cool.
ears looks fine to me. I like to see him talk!
keep up the good work, and don't forget to count the fingers once in a while.

tobe90: sssch! Don´t tell anybody! :)
Here´s the update. I´ve also done som lashes, but only on the upper lid, for the moment.
I´ll have to work on the material for his eye, as well.
Also I´ve done some pretty heavy changes to the topology.
Haven´t done any texture changes yet though.
Anyways, here´s the pictures.

Yay! Eyelids! That makes a big difference! They could maybe stand to be a little thicker, but that's nitpicking. ;)
It actually took me a couple glances to notice the problem with the fingers-- they're modeled quite well, I like the style of them... I just kept wondering why they looked short, and realized what was wrong on the third look or so. So don't feel too bad, heheh.
Very interested in seeing wires of the new topology!

Ok, wires comin up!
Maybe not so different from before, but it works alot better, with the deforms, plus I got rid of some odd geometry.
Did alot of work around the ears that´s hardly noticable.

The geometry looks nice. It should animate with little trouble. I took a look at the animation.. I would definitely agree w/ adding the eyelids. There looks to be too much creasing going on too far from the eye socket. (EDIT i wrote this before i noticed the addition)The ears might use some tweaking, but I would say put the hair back before making changes. Still looking good.

You definitely cleaned up the wire-- looks like it's a pretty good setup now, though I can see the nose is giving you hassle... they always do.
I can also see you did work a lot on the ear-- it looks much better now that you have it sticking out farther, though it still seems too small.

the ear and chin look much better. the forehead doesn't look flat now, so no worries there either.

First off, great progress so far...I love the creases when his eyes are squeezed shut.
My only suggestion is that his mouth open from the hinge of the jaw (right infront of the ear) instead of the chin. As it stands his mouth opens but his actual jaw never moves.
Keep it up, you're doing great
