I'm new at this forum, so I don't know many of you gays yet. Nevertheless I'm dealing with a problem I can't get fixed. I'm working on this interior rendering (the exterior gives no problems at all), but somehow the illumination goes wrong on the ceiling...
Here's a picture with my problem: the white spots on the ceiling should be much more dark I guess.

I'm using photon maps in brazil. There's something about it in the brazil help: they suggest to use elliptical search in stead of spherical, but it doesn't fix the problem. It turns out a little bit in the right direction, but my render times are multiplied by 10 I guess, and the problem isn't totally gone at all.

If you want to check out some of this newbe's work... (only working for 4 months with 3Ds max for the moment):click here (http://users.pandora.be/sorgeloos/tweakers)

I'm not sure if this is the problem but it looks like you have a spotlight or omni light too close to the ceiling. Or the light settings might be too high. If that still doesn't work, try changing the color of the light. ;)

Interesting scene,.. I would like to do a max 5 radiosity on it.
Photon mapping just seems a little over the top for interior architecture, but I will be interested to see what you can do with it in Brazil.

Under your Shadow map parameters try increase your size to 1024 or 2048

Nice way to make new friends. :)

I'm sorry, but none of the solutions you suggested is the right one.
@ Flemming Hansen: I'm using brazil shadows, so I can't increase the shadow size. Maybe I should use shadow maps, but therefore I have to change the type of my lightsource from area to spot or omni, which gives other results. And I always tought brazil shadows were doing fine,...
[add on]I just tried shadow maps with an omni light, but the result is even worst :-( [/add on]

@Ls3D: I don't like max 5 radiosity because of the huge memory consumption, especially in more complex spaces (eg: when I'm adding pretty high detailed furniture to my scene). Maybe there's something wrong with my way of working with it,...

@cg_master: there's no omni light close to the ceiling, there's only one area light far, far away from my building (outdoors). Lowering down light settings gives darker scenes, but the problem remains... Changing the light color doesn't solve the problem either.

@Martijn Wijmer and all the other guys who didn't feel good reading my first sentence... spelling mistake 'gays' should be 'guys' off course (I'm not English-speaking and I guess you've all noticed yet) Nevertheless it could be in the top ten opening sentences :-)
