View Full Version : Enchanted forest - Environment/Character - the_hand
insanepoly 05-31-2002, 09:00 AM Here's my entry- Chira the Centaur, Guardian of the Enchanted Forest. She's the living embodiment of the enchanted forest and she guards it against all intruders.
Still in the early modeling stage, trying very hard to get the anatomy of the horse right, especially the legs.

Looks nice :)
For the legs use lots of reference material from the net,or maybe take a trip to the library :)
I have seen some of your other incredible work so I can definitely see you nailing these horse legs pretty quickly

Fantastic!!!:applause: :applause:
That looks great! I think that will really be a great piece when completed.
I think what I'm not crazy about with the horse half is the muscle structure/definition. I'm not worried though 'cause if anyone will nail it you will. :D

Here's an update with more definition given to the body of the horse. Its quite difficult to get good references of horses, especially musculature and anatomy.

ahhh, looks great, the proportions look bang on, but are the hands a little small? I'm not sure. The front legs may be a tad skinny too, imo

He! that is looking really good.
Great annatomy:applause:
The line that splits your moddel it two is really clear.
Maybe it would look better with out( Line between the eyes)
I think this is because you mirrored the right or left side to the oposite site, so you only had to moddel the half of the moddel.
Why don't you show us a other viuw than the front vieuw?

holy cr@p. That looks amazing. I agree it needs some real word wear and tear going on, but in general it's incredable. Really awe inspiering. Is the texture on the horns procedural (like a ramp) or is it by hand? Either way I'd love to know how you got the gradient to follow the length of the horn so well.
From now on when I click into your thread I need to tie my jaw shut. I'm starting to get permanent keyboard scars on my chin. ;)

Here's a couple of updates of the day. Updated and refined some of the textures, also did some skinning test.
Needs to add more accessories and jewellery on the body, maybe add a bow and a quiver of arrows as well. Hope to get started on the forest as well.
ZrO-1- its a lofted object with tweaks along the loft profile to create the ridges. Additional bump maps were added to heighten the effect.

Wow, how'd I miss this one? Excellent stuff. :buttrock: I like the softness and grace you get, like your other girls. Horse half looks great too. Not crazy about the surface on it right now, but I know that'll come, the structure is great. The belly button area is about the only thing I can find to crit on there otherwise..yummy.
Look forward to the rest :)

Damn! Looking really nice there man! I'd definately work on those hands though a bit more, so much grace and detail to her, but the hands are looking a bit strange. Make them slender and beautiful too! I'd also make those ears of hers a bit smaller, right now they look a bit out of perportion to the rest of her face. Personally, I'd make your textures a little higher contrast, but that's just me.. looking great though, keep it up!
good ,really good ,do you plan to put some fur on the horse
PedramK
06-07-2002, 09:09 PM
Very nicely modelled. But the skin of the horse looks too shiney.
Would probably look better toned down.
Although, if your not going to fur the horse down, and the skin
texture is supposed to be the fur, then i guess it could be kinda
ok shinyness
Tellerve
06-08-2002, 12:39 AM
Wow, very nicely done female head and body. And the horse proportions are well done as well. I think my only critiques would be the hands need some refining as said. Basically some more delicay to them and definition. I don't like the new ariola(?) and nipple area on her breast as it looks to me like she got bit by a mosquito instead of nature taking its course (ie go back to the first one). And finally, well I think somehow making the hair of the horse look more like hair as opposed to bluish black spray paint.
But really, great job and I look forward to the further improvements!

This will pretty much be the last update to the character, in a couple of days, I should be starting on the background.
Rhid1en- did a little tweaking in the skinning of the hands, as for the ears, it is part of the design. Regarding the textures, I think its has more to do the the current lighting more than anything else, once I am done with background, the lighting will probably be more dramatic.
Gabe- unfortunately not, I rather dedicate the additional cpu cycles to a more complex background. Right now, I think fur would be a luxury.
PedramK- the shininess is probably due the strong rim lights I have.
Tellerve- you are right about the color of the nipples, I have since tone it down a little, also change the color of the tail to reflect a little closer to the color of the body.

 Wow, that is some fine work! And I love the strong rim light on the horse's back; looks like its sweaty, almost steaming with that glow effect on it. Nice face too!
The hand holding the bow doesn't really seem to be holding anything though. It looks like it's just resting there, not really gripping it.

06-13-2002, 06:12 PM
Finally found some free time to model the background. This is just an early test, the lighting probably needs some work as well as some additional stuff as well. Think the trees needs a little more detail as well. Its a little bland at the moment, enviroment is not exactly my strong suite. I'll incorporate the character into it once the enviroment is finished. Suggestions anyone?
-OZ- this is embarassing, I've got ways to go
Jacko Cohen- I wanted the character to convey a ice cold detached demeanor, so that's why she's got this bland expression on her face. I guess this IS her personality :)
pearson- again this goes to the personality of the character- she's just holding the bow lightly because she knows she can kick ass anytime :)
Rhid1en
06-13-2002, 06:34 PM
Excellent start on your background! I think it will convey the mood of the character very well. I’d say, either add a displacement map and some bump maps to those trees to start, or keep adding detail to them. Right now they’re way to smooth on their edges especially. The mushrooms add a nice touch; maybe though try varying some of their textures a bit to add that little touch of detail. Perhaps also throw in some twigs, fallen leaves, stones/pebbles on the ground to break it up a bit and make it a little more interesting. I think some decomposing fallen leaves and maybe some fern sprouts spring up here and there would be a really nice touch and contribute to her stoic expression. A flock of ravens residing in the background would be pretty dramatic too, if you find a little time. I’d also try to add a little more depth to the light passing thru the trees. I realize you have a winter, kind of foggy thing going on and would like to keep it pretty diffused, so keep it minimal, but it could help add a little more depth to an already emerging beautiful scene!
Really great work man, I can’t wait to see her lurking around in there!

I really like the muted palete your enviroment has in this last pic. I think that the background trees look pretty good as they are right now. What I'd recomend is work on the textures of the two middle-ground trees on the left, and the fore-ground tree on the right. Especially the fore-ground tree needs a strong sense of depth to the textures. The middle-ground trees could pro'lly be somwhere inbetween the froe-ground tree and the back-ground trees as far as the depth of the textures.

the latest update.
things to add- more variety of flowers, dead leaves on the ground and in the air and more twigs on the ground. Also nedd to add a touch of specular blomm onto the background.
Rhid1en- thanks for the suggestions, I've added some displacement on the trees in the foreground and I have to say, it makes a lot of difference.
ZrO-1- I might add a bit of DOP effect to heighten the sense of distance between the foreground and background. Takes a long time to render though.

Nice work Miister Haand :applause:
I see you's going for the autumnal look but... I think the grass could be more affected by the light as it looks painted in at the moment, the shrooms need collars.
Amanita Muscaria Muscaria, or 'fly agaric' (or Soma)
erowid.org (http://www.erowid.org/plants/amanitas/amanitas_images.shtml) has a good selection of images my favourite being Amanita Muscaria with Snail (http://www.erowid.org/plants/show_image.php3?image=amanitas/amanita_muscaria_muscaria12.jpg)

odubtaig- you won't believe this, but I am actually block from accessing the site by my ISP's proxy servers. I didn't know mushrooms have collars :)
Actually there's some pathetic looking shruberry in the background, just that they don't look too shrubbery that's all.

First off, I think this is awesome. I like how you desaturated the color of the lips, and you overall color scheme is working well.
Second, I have some suggestions. I circled in red four branches you cloned (or look really really similar). I think you can remove them altogether, or decrease there size and give more variation with twigs within the branches.
The purple lines is the dialogue between the foreground centaur and background tree. I believe they need more room to talk.
that's it. Looks great.

Also, you artistic skills and style remind me of Final Fantasy 8 and 10. I could venture to guess you have done work for them, but I'll let you tell us.
Oh, the skin tone of your character is very light (nice), yet it is competing with the tone of the light behind the trees. Perhaps a different color for the background.
cheers:thumbsup:

Looking great..environment goes with her very well.
I think I see the trouble spot though, because she's so light, and the trees behind her are light, that one big tree being pitch dark is definitely fighting for attention with her..it almost feels like it's in front of her..I'd try and balance that out..she seems to have less contrast than the BG does.
Otherwise, fab. The pixie dust (pollen? dandelions?) almost makes me think of snow, a winter version at some point would be really cool, she seems to have an icy demeanor as it is.
(edit: damn this real time stuff..he posted the pic while I was writing..so, try to imagine I'm only looking at the original, and not completely crazy/ignant ;) )

I think alaklij makes some really good points here, especially regarding the skin color and trees, the figure doesnt stand out as it should. The other comment is more compositional but would still help. So mix up the colors a little more and I say it excellent.:buttrock:

Hey, just a couple quick critiques...
1) The exposed breast is kinda buggin' me... I've seen a lot of boobs, and the top where it comes from the chest needs to be widened slightly...
2) The hand looks like it's holding a beer bottle, not a bow... she's a protector, give her strength, have her grasping that mofo! Just mho on that one...
3) I've spent a lot of time with horses, and I'll tell ya, those white feet need to be alittle more hairy, and a little more dirty...
4)And just as a quick other critique... The girl part is so skinny and slender, she needs for some ribs to show slightly...
Other than that I looks awesome man, keep up the great work!
UrbanFuturistic
06-18-2002, 03:40 PM
You see, what's happened here is she's actually quite upset; something jogged her elbow and the bow twanged her breast and any girl can tell you how much that would hurt. Hence the pose and the really quite narked expression on the face :D
Yeah, I think all mushrooms have collars. The head of a mushroom starts with the underside completely attached to the stem and then breaks off to release the spores. This seems particularly pronounced with Fly Agaric.
...and yeah, I'm with a pretty liberal ISP; turns out erowid.org has a section on loads of drugs... OK, I've heard of Mescaline but WTF is 4-ACETOXY-DiPT?

I just want to thank everyone who took the time to offer very help suggestions and critques.
Here's the latest update:
Color-corrected in Photoshop to reduce the color saturation. Volumetric light was added in the background plus depth of field. The cloned branches individually tweaked. The shadow falling on the tree was also lightened. Also adjusted the grip on the bow and the textures on the legs.

My last recommendation is to show us the hoofs touching the ground. It's a little annoying to see the entire figure then it is cut off at the feet. Makes me wonder why. You could achieve this by dropping her into the background about a meter.
Beautiful!

Into the nit picking business (awesome work by the way). Those nails look like they are to broad. It looks like they are covering the whole tip of her fingers. They should not be as wide as they are. (And who am I to tell?)
I feel kind of foolish to point out such a thing on such a good model. I have some way left until I am at your position.

Here's the same scene relighted with more contrast. The autumn feeling is also enhanced with a stronger sepia toned lighting.
Joril- since she spends her days hidden deep within the forest, I would expect her to maintain a porcelain complexion.
Mikael P.- I would agree the hands are not as well modeled and textured as they should be, hopefully I can find the time to tweak them. Ideally, the texture on the fingers should have some folds in them.
