View Full Version : MAYA soft hard / edge
Beerma 10-10-2003, 12:38 AM Hey im very new too modeling and i was wondering why, as i model, do the edges randomly become soft or hard....i am using poly primatives to begin modeling and was thinking that it may be that....I also need to know how to configure soft/hard edges myself...help would be greatly apreaciated!!!! btw alla this is to help my first ever model (dif thread in game modeling) become front page material!! so com'n give a brother a hand!

Heya - not too hard. for some operations, like split polygon tool, Maya will always create a hard edge. Others, like extrude, will create a hard edge if over a certain degree.
Use:
Edit Polygons -> Normals -> Soften/Harden
...to soften or harden your edges. Open the option box to set parameters between hard and soft. You can apply to the whole object at once, or to any selected edge.

you might also have to go to "Edit polygons> Set Normals >Set to Face" before you soften or harden the edges. Open the "Set to Face" option in a seperate window and first check the box on, hit apply, the check the box off and click apply - then you should have no problem softening or hardening the edges.
That's what I have to do in Maya 4.0, it might be different in the newer versions though.
