there's a bit of Arnold out in Messiah Project but Marcos Fajardo is still working on his algorithms, so we can say Arnold is not out yet!!!!:)

There is Entropy which will include a free MAX plug-in with the 3.1 release -- http://www.exluna.com/.

AIR is available now and works well with MaxMan -- http://www.sitexgraphics.com/ resp. http://www.animallogic.com/research/maxman.

Brazil is also looks very promising already,though it can'tdo displacement mapping and doesn't support programmable shading -- http://www.splutterfish.com/

All three above renderers support GI via monte-carlo irradiance.

Could you name a single reason why you want precisely "Arnold"?

Heya Daxx. I'm one of the beta testers for arnold and though I can't say much about its features etc I can say that development is moving very quickly towards a release. More details should be released in the next few months as well as an official website. The programmers are exytremely good at what they do and want to make as good a release as possible so it has been delayed along the way - Unfortunately seeing as it is a personally funded project the developers do have to take a break from time to time to earn money to pay rent and buy food ;)

Yeah, I know but, messiah:render uses just a little part of arnlod and it's adjusted too. Soo, u really can't compare it with the arnold renderer... :D

but they bought the arnold render from the developer so arnold as it was is no more ( unless I misread something )

On that front. Anyone know who did this??

It's a dublin based company I think, Ruairi Robinson (the 50%grey guy) used to work there...

EDIT: I think I got it

Hi Steve,

Yeah the company I work for Pluto (http://www.pluto.ie) did that commercial and it was indeed rendered in Arnold. Ruairi robinson modelled the characters, hubert montag animated them, ed bruce (whos site you got it from) did the sets, ruairi did the lighting. We've done quite a few ads with maxarnie at this stage and it is a really pleasant renderer to use - Again not fully complete so it can't be compared to anything else at this stage. I'm trying to kick the Developer (http://www.3dluvr.com/marcosss) to get some details up but he's busy coding at the moment and I don't want to break his pattern ;)

Hopefully some more details soon.

joconnell - Great work - I really like the look of the lighting in those renders.. Simply fantastic.

Someone I spoke to mentioned that the dog in particular look very similar to one in some ads Aardman did a couple of years ago - for skips.

Anyway have you seen these Flora Ads?? Also great lighting and rendering...

(great stuff by Pierre Coffin and his team over in Paris.)

Yeah it's a beautiful style - We were going to use it as reference for a commercial we didn't get unfortunately. I see the same compnay must have done the halifax "who gives you extra" series of ads too - or else someone is doing a very close imitation. Arnold (and every other gi renderer to some extent) does a great job of making characters look like clay which is why we got so many psuedo aardman type commercials. The main 3d op on them was a guy called ruairi robinson (http://www.3dluvr.com/ruairi) who made the shot film 50% grey - you'll see a similar stye of character design through the ads as he handled most of the character modelling / design.

Gi does give everything such a lovely quality to them and if the render times are viable then I don't see a reason not to use it - Admittedly I've never worked on a huge project the likes of the mill would do so I've never learned all of the little hack they do to give the same impression using simple lighting rigs and the odd bit of raytracing - I'd love to be trained by an ILM technical director for that type of stuff - I'd probably end up using the 3dsmax scanline instead of anything else ;)

Ya. Don't hafta do much lighting and rendering myself, but I appreciate the artestry.

On that note a friend passed this onto me recently (seems like a nice idea but haven't tried it yet tho...)

=========================================
"Here's how Pierre Coffin faked the radiosity rendering for the Flora ads...

Render your scene.
Render it again after giving your character a chrome texture
Blur the result and use one of the overlay modes to composite it over your original render.

It's only approximate but I think it does help integrate the characters into their environment.

It works well for dropping things into live action too."
========================================

Nice huh?

BTW as a side note I wondered as you seem to have a special 'deal' with the Arnold team -Did they approach you or visa versa??

Still I hope Arnold IS released sometime in the near future, I think it'd benifit a lot of people...

:)
