alesmav 10-10-2003, 12:26 AM Since I haven't done awfully lot of character animation I would like to know, how do you guys normally animate your joints if FK. Do you use local or gimbal mode to rotate the joints?

Gimbal. Always Gimbal.
Gimbal mode is the only way you can really control the animation in the same way maya will compute it. If you're having probelms because an axis is locked out, so will Maya, and you will be able to better prepare for it. (Like adding an extra joint above the locked one.
So thats one vote for Gimbal

i vote gimabal. If u don't use gimal and start rotating in global, ur inbetweens will be all messed up and harder to manipulate.

I actually get quite good results in local mode. I find it far more intuitive, and in most cases I can avoid gimbal flipping by simplying rotating along one axis at a time (and not just grabbing that rotate sphere and dragging it randomly- that´s gonna´make things flip real bad!). Even when gimbal flipping does occur, rotating in gimbal mode still doesn´t help you much- if the x and z axis are nearly aligned, there´s no way you can see which axis you actually want to rotate. Local mode makes things simpler, even though what you see is *not* always what you get.
The truth is, I rotate in all three modes, depending on what I need to do. Yesterday I was rotating in world mode to get some poses down (gasp!)... if it screws up my curves I´ll worry about cleaning it up later on when I´m fine tuning things.
So, here´s a vote for all three, although mainly I´m using local.

I use all modes.
note, that you can change the modes very quickly with a marking menu, by holding "e" and clicking in the viewport, one of the greatest improvements of maya in the last years.
