Hi and welcome to my SB here at CG-Society.
I'm Tom De Vis, I love to draw, paint, model, texture and animate. I'm a student at DAE (http://www.digitalartsandentertainment.com/#/en/News/) in Belgium.
This SB is made for the single purpose of posting all my work from now on and to show my progress over time.
I'm putting a lot of my time in the 3D part of the course and I felt I was neglecting the drawing side so I'm forcing myself to draw everyday even if it is only a little.

I hope you'll enjoy your stay

Cheers!
Tom

Nice stuff Tom! Looks like you're improving.

I really like the hatching on the fold study. Also, the "entertainer" head study is really cool! I really like the front view. On the side/profile view, I'd say that as far as anatomy goes, you could add more width to the skull, particularly in the area behind the ear. Granted, not everyone's skull anatomy is the same, but the side view here strikes me as having a shortened skull. Hopefully that makes sense. I'd do a paint-over, but I'm a bit busy at the moment so I'll just post a reference image:

http://lh3.ggpht.com/_sNLe4Rk9JTI/TQKPdHegDbI/AAAAAAAAAVQ/1X1BhOL3mFA/Untitled-1.jpg

Note in particular:

•How much area the skull has behind the ear in general
•Where the widest point of the skull is in this view
•Where the tallest point of the skull is, and how the skull remains tall continuing towards the crown of the head

Anyway, I really like your thread. I think your concepts, color, and values in general are really strong. If I were you, I'd spend a little time every day practicing lots quick sketches & gestures from anatomy books, and before long you'll be a force to be reckoned with! Keep it up dude!

Jabruher : Thanks, I'm still trying to find some spare time to look at it and correct it, I feel dumb I missed that one. I'm currently making that model in Zbrush and I really need to paint it correctly before I try to sculpt it.

------

We had the task to create a urban Robin Hood of current time. But today it seemed that it was supposed to be a realistic character of which there are multiple (but not that many) around. So I'm going to restart on the thumbs. Here is what I had:

These are nice! I will offer up a couple of practical observations to the whole Archery thing as I used to hunt with a bow quite a bit..

1.) when designing the clothing keep it tight to the body especially in the arm and chest area as you do not want the bow string to become entangled in loose clothing.

2.) many archers will wear a guard on their off arm to keep the string from hitting the inside of their arm (yeah that can hurt).

http://www.freewebs.com/targetsm/sisu_6.jpg

3.) Most match grade bows are used with a "release" of some sort as having a consistent trigger-like release of the string really helps accuracy.

http://www.littlejons.com/prodimg/5851.jpg

remember if your character is using a release there hand will be much further pulled back than if free handing it.

I look forward to seeing your progression on this project.

Thanks a lot MistFit, that is some awesome feedback ! I have written it down and hope I never forget!

Was finding it very irritating that I have so much trouble with anatomy so I figured that
I should start studying anatomy more in depth. And as my previous attempt of daily
sketching was forced to stop rather fast due enormous amounts of schoolwork I shall
now force myself in multiple weekly tasks to improve. If I can't force myself 1
day a week to study I shouldn't be doing this.

Heyhey a fellow Flemish soul :)

I didn't know about that DAE. I'll spit out their website asap.

Smart thinking.
Try not to rush (wanting to learn too much too fast) because you'll only end up frustrated in the end. This path just needs to be taken step by step ;)

One thing I miss here are studies from life (I mean from real life, not from photo).
Those are a must. I think you should make that your number 1 priority:
draw from life every day. Don't go to bed until you have!
And do this forever.
Trust me on that one.

If you can, get some life drawing sessions at your school.
If nobody mentioned this there yet, approach your teachers and ask them if it's possible, where and when etc.
Do iiiit!

Hey NR43, thanks for you passing by. I actually did have some life drawing lessons (4 times 3 hours) but that's all, there should be coming some more classes next semester.
I'll try to do some more life drawing but time is always a pain in the ass.

Trying to create 5 poses for cartoony female character, the character is a sexy cop who likes the attention.
Once there was an accident right besides her while she was doing traffic control. The cause was that one driver couldn't keep his eyes of her. That gave her an ultimate "rush".

I'm not sure if these are the best poses to describe her character / personality.
Any tips and feedback are most welcome

Maybe add a bit more shoulder blade sticking out in the sideview?I like the 3 poses on the sides and bottom best in the previous post. The 2 top middle poses look a bit over the top for this kind of character (but perhaps that's what you're looking for...)

Thanks for the reply, I was indeed trying to push it as far as possible, might have overdone it a bit. Actually she is a personage that loves the attention she gets from other people (even if they are staring).

loved that I was forced to draw a lot the last day, but I've noticed that I have
a lot of problems drawing a simple background to strengthen a character.
Gonna look how other people do it for future drawings.

--

I really tried to many things out one day for the final with to less time left,
but while arranging the heads I figured I'd try to lead peoples eyes by
positioning such as they look at the next picture.

http://i55.tinypic.com/2j3ptn8.jpg

I could really use some feedback on how to create such effect better, because now
I have some dead spots which let the viewer wander of. (or on anything for that matter)

You know how it goes with online forums... give feedback to increase the chance of getting some in return ^^

Do an extensive search and reading on composition.
If you do, you will learn that people have a natural tendency to start looking at a picture from the bottom left into the picture. The "dead spots" you have aren't really a problem, the real problem is that none of the faces are connected, making things look too cluttered. Try overlapping them a bit and you'll see your sketches will read much nicer. Also, use contrast. Add a bit of background hatching etc here and there.

TomDeVis

NR43: Thanks a lot, I've never looked at the online happening at such a way, but it makes a lot of sense once you know it.

The heads were supposed to be presented so I guess that I couldn't have cluttered them and gave them a background color. But I guess I should have made a difference for putting it online and the ones I gave in for submissions.

--------------

The result of my cartoony character was that it wasn't 3D ready. So I'll be looking at some 3D characters for a better understanding of how to create cartoony, yet realistic anatomy.

I had the luck that I could spend a full day on this matte painting.

I've learned a lot from this by simply painting it, still need to import
it into fusion, and animate a character into the scene.
But from what I've researched there should be a lot more 3D in it to make it believable.
I'll be adding particles and glows for fire in the picture, as well as some other things
to make the matte paint live

Shame again there won't be enough time, but it is deffinatly a thing I would prefer to again.

Maybe you should concentrate on forms drawing, as well as on a more consistent anatomy study. For example, set yourself a goal to learn all muscles of arm in one month, etc. Don't jump from one thing to another. Some your drawings more concentrate on lines than forms.

TomDeVis

Hey, thanks for stepping by mister3D. I know I should focus more on studying, but it is just that I don't have the time. Once I'm graduated I'll spend some more time on studying aspect by aspect. Now I just draw what I feel like drawing/studying.
Nevertheless thanks for the tip.

got some great suggestion from Lyno ( http://linodrieghe.blogspot.com ) which I tried out today, but I guess I rushed it a bit to much to work out properly.

So on wecookart.com there is this activity to study by drawing something 100 times, so I was looking around the web for how to draw feet and a friend showed me how david fynch draws his feet,
which made some sense to me, except that he draws the feet a lot pointier for his comics.

I really like these last drawings. And the feet drawings you did! Really great stuff.

The breasts in your sketches tend to feel awkward to me. I dislike giving ambiguous feedback like that, so I apologise. Not quite sure what feels off about them.

Out of curiosity, is the ninja doodle in the lower corner a few pictures back Kakashi?

@Pacucho: Yes that one is done in photoshop and thank you for the kind words.

@DriftingEmber: I had to look up who Kakashi was, because I drew it from a DA cosplay picture. But indeed, it is Kakashi ^^. On the boobs thing, I know what you are referring to. I tend to draw boobs unsupported, but once there are cloths they should fall differently.
