View Full Version : Enchanted Forest - Environment - Adam Klein
Adam Klein 05-30-2002, 11:32 PM Ohh a tad late in the game, :D but this topic is too tasty to resist, I will be doing an enchanted mushroom forest, there will be little things everywhere, and little creatures, perhaps little pirate/elf ships or something, and and a wider shot with more water....
what do you think about the texture on the mushroom stalks? too river-birchy?
Also composition? I'm still debating....

I like the piece.
Not too crazy about the mushroom texture right now. I'd lower the bump, and have the top colored differently than the stalk. Also the water is too blue for the way the sky is, I guess make it more grey like the rest.
It looks like you have a cool start. I like the overall piece :D

been outta town, just getting back
The water.... I haven't messed with it at all, I'm looking for some references, thinking that the water and sky doesn't have to match so much if it's colored water, there's a nasty lake down the road from here and the water is the color of jade, I may end up with a jade sea too... depends
either way, The sky won't be visible in the final image anyway
:lightbulb how about an update...

dodo, I pushed the mushrooms into the ground, its a tad abrupt but far from finished, good tip, I thought maybe it would have been ok for mushrooms, but that looks much better
thanks for the comments

The mushrooms look a lot better pushed down a bit. I like the 'shrooms in the background too. They look great.
I'm not crazy about that green glow in the pic though. I like the streaming yellowish light...but don't really like that greenish one. It almost looks like a toxic radioctive cloud.

heh, heh, yeah ZrO it did look radioactivenow that you mention it, :D it was sort of a temp paint on, what do you think of this redish glow?
first signs of life, sorta, built a ship, more to come

Maybe I just missed something earlier in the thread, but I don't understand what the glow is for. Is it supposed to be haze or fog? I'm not knocking it but to me it almost looks like an error in film exposure in traditional photography. sorry.
I like the boat. It reminds me of a chinese junk (that's the real name ;) ). What is it's scale? Is it human sized or fairy/dwarf size?
I don't mean to be over critical, just that this piece looks really good and it seems to have a lot of potential so I'm being really picky. :D

Looks nice, You might think about a bit more constrast. I still think the tops of the shrooms should be a different color, would add to the interest of the piece

ZrO: lol, no you're right, a very valid point....
right now, it's just paint over, soon that part will be lights, prolly Volumetrics, but I'm just sort of getting the 'enchanted' color down.... ah, I'll just ditch it for now and come back to it.:D
And yeah, I got my inspiration for the ship from a Junk, great observation! As for the scale, I know the ship makes the scale sooooo small, but....
its supposed to be ..... fairy sized, although it won't be fairies on it..... the next piece I add will be more of a key to size and I'd love to hear what you think about scale then too, I'm a tad undecisive about this point right now.
the current scale just makes the little people sooo...... little
I appreciate the input, I'm banging it out on this one so, critic away, I really like hearing what ya'll think, I'd like this to be a nice peice for portfolio, I may use it as my website main image so....
James: good point, some of the shrooms are looking a bit too similar in color,,, the lighting is flat right now, maybe it'll look more contrasty when I create pools of light. I'll see what I can do. thanks for the comment
back to work

Ooooooo...
good update! ;)
I'm noticing so many more of the little things now that that glow is out of the way :p.
Are you going to bring those ferny looking plants that are under the big mushrooms down into the foreground more? I like them and they might look neat if they come forward more and thin out as they do.
Great stuff!!!

well, your idea is nice, BUT
the entire color scheme, makes it look like a children's book image, and there's far too much color for stuff like dat. Plus, you seem to be over-recycling your textures. I really like your mushroom idea, but you just gotta improve it. Make it realistic and mystical (same scene almost) and you got something good going on.

Zero: yeah, what was I thinkin' :surprised glad you like the new stuff, I'm working on making this a late evenening/night setting now...not sure what I think yet, I'll post when I get something I like, much more thurough lighting though!
Dark Des: gracious senior!
Gabe: glad you like, walk around, take a bite :insane:
Diazgl: I see your point BUT, aren't children' images legitamate as well? It's a lot of what pays for CG after all. :D
some good comments, however this is early, as I refine each section, you'll see it fledge out. I'd like to hear what you think of the next one, hell, I gotta get to work on it:lightbulb

He I just wanted to say that I really like  your enviroment.
I don't have critics just some Ideas that I think will improve the pic.
The mushrooms in the back of the forest look quite stoney to me not realy muschroom like ( maybe this is yuor intention and the all have the same light maybe if you make the texture of the muschrooms in the back darker or put les light on them so the atten tion get more drawn to the front of the image.
O and maybe a nice little harbour in the water would be cool
Keep it up:cool:

Iguiniz.X : thanks, I agree, in fact I got rid of the background mushrooms altogether, I'll be making some better ones soon.
Today I began turning this into the nighttime, and weeded out the stuff I didnt' like. And worked with some other stuff too..
not as much as I'd hoped,
btw I like the daytime better, but hopefully with some major tweaking yet to come this'll pull together nicely as night.

sweet deal man, I like it. I really liked befor when you were playing around with those lighting effects...I hope to see more of that.
for advice I would offer the idea of giving the night scene more light maybe illuminating the underside of the shrooms or something...the day time is starting to come alive nicely but I think with some lighting effects and the stuff you talked about adding the night scene could be even better. Keep going

nah, dont get me wrong. I meant that for the theme of the contest, it is a bit out to make something like dat.
I like the nighttime shot, puts more magic into it.
You prolly already said that, but....what's with the ship?
Adam Klein
06-07-2002, 06:06 PM
Scott: thanks dude, I'm not sure bout it yet either, I'll definietely experiment with the lights more
diagzl: no worries. :) what do you mean what's up with the ship? the way it looks, the way its unfinished, or that it is in there altogether??
I didn't mention, but this is my first envirnonment! I'm not sayin' take it easy on me at all, in fact drop the hammer, but please be specific, because that will help, being vague jus' makes my head hurt
thanks ya'll

sorry adam, i should be the first to know that sarcasm is not efficient. I meant that it doesn't fit in the scene composition. Maybe in other's peoples minds it makes sense, but I dont get it as it is.

no problemo, I see what you mean, I guess I sort of jus' stuck it in there:argh: , I'll try and incorperate it in there better
