I am having problems baking information onto the chilrdren of a transform node.


Has any one worked in depth with tranfer nodes and their painstaking removal from a scene?

Yep. I've done a fair amount of MoCap work where that happens a lot.

Look at Dirk Bialluch's extremely handy MotionControl script. It has some very handy baking tools that can handle world position/orientation. It's also not terribly hard to write your own by using the xform -ws command.
