View Full Version : My female character head
peaxio 10-09-2003, 04:41 PM Hey everybody? This is my first post here. I've been working on this head for a while now. It was all done in 3Ds max 5.1 by extruding polygons, meshsmooth, and symetry. I just need some feedback on what can be improved to make the head better. I'm trying to make her look asian-ish with a mix of Jue from Final Flight of the Osiris, and Zhang Ziyi from Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon. I'm also trying to get a look like the Final Fantasy games, such as Final Fantasy X and X-2. I've been doing a lot of research on those types of faces, but I just can't seem to get my head to look the way I want it to. So your critiques will help me very much. Thanks, and hope to hear from you other 3d artists.

What proportions aren't right? Give me an example so I know what to look for to modify.
hi peaxio
now i think this model is really good. beautiful mouth, she looks cute.
Dont see any wrong proportions...
well the ears look strange, perhaps look up a good reference for them.
great wip :D

Good work so far. I think what Acemax was refering to was the shape of the back of her head. It seems too long and wide. Her head should be about the same height as it is long -- (chin to top of head = nose to back of the head). The back of the head should also curve back to the neck a little higher up. Not to be toooo picky, but also, her head seems a bit too flat.
that's my 2 cents. Otherwise it looks great

I have noticed that and made some modifications already. I'll post some updates next week.
You can nick pick as much as you want. Anybody can. You can even tell me it looks like crap, but you should say why you don't like it, and what could be changed. Any comment is helpful.
What part of the head is too flat? You mean the face? A lot of asians have somewhat flat faces. I'm trying to achieve that. I'm asian too and this head model actually has some of my features. I've watched Final Flight of the Osiris to know that Jue's face is almost as flat as my head model.
Thanks for your critiques.

looking pretty good. For the ear, I'd say it's too low, the top of the ear should be even with the brow, also the jaw is too long and you elongated the head to compensate. Having very precise blueprints to build from is key. I had to learn that the hard way and wasted a lot of time.

Well, after a long time of waiting, procastinating, pre-planing, and inspiration, I've finally been able to get back to my character I've been trying to create. I scrapped the last head and started a new one, this time in Maya 5. I've been told that modeling organic things in Maya look a lot better than in 3Ds Max. Anyway, I've been working on this head for two days now. It only took me about 10 hours to get this far. The ears need to worked a bit as well as the mouth. I'm still trying to work the topology.
Here's my head. Any critiques or comments are welcome. Thanks!

Well, here's a lil update again. I re-did the whole entire head, this time in 3ds Max, dunno why. I've scrapped so many heads. I just seem to like the modeling better in 3ds Max, and the texturing in Maya. Oh well... I'm still trying to change the face around still to make her look young. She looks kinda 20-ish in this one, trying to make her look 17. The ears need a little bit more work too.
Any critiques or comments are welcome and greatly apprecitated.
Thanks!

What?! No critiques or comments?! Oh well...
Her head's coming along fine so far, and still making some adjustments here and there.
Right now I'm just working on her body. Will post an update on that sometime later when I get the chance.
So, thanks to all those who've helped me so far. You've been a really big help.

Thanks guys for all the critiques so far.
Right now I'm still working on her and working a little bit of texturing on the way. Will post some latest updates soon.

Ok. Said that I'd update and I did.
Just tweaked things around here and there. I'm deciding to change her jaw a bit to make her face a little more petite.
Hopefully sometime in the future I'll be wanting to rig this character up and be able to animate her.
Let me know what you people think. Any crituques or comments would be very helpful. Thanks a bunch folks.

Hi Peaxio
Looking good!
I don't see anything wrong at all but I'm new at this. Can't wait to see her with hair and texture.
C
Very good work! I like it.. Now I'm comparing this with my WIP (http://www.cgtalk.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=145033) and yours look far better. I'm going to take some reference from your model! :)

More updates coming!

Ok. Did some more updating. This time on her body. It's still in the works, obviously. I'm having difficulty around the breast area. Trying to make them look natural and fit for her age/ body type. So, any critiques or comments are more than welcome. I'm deciding to model everything first before moving on to the texturing. Thanks folks!

Really nice work - well crafted and neatly proportioned. Maybe the profile is slightly 'flat'... how about making the nose a little more prominent?

Well, it's coming along, but very slowly...
Here's what I've got so far. I just have so many things to do now that I've been working on this on and off. I'm trying to study topology and studying other wireframes from other models...
Anyway, here's what I got so far. The sides and back has been barely touched, so it's just these shots for now. No lighting or anything, and just a standard blinn material. Will work with Oranatrix for the hair, if I can get a chance to play around with it more.
Any comments or critiques would be greatly appreciated. Thanks folks!

looks really good, only crit is that there is a strange looking shadow on the perspective view, makes its right breast look flat, but of course that is just lighting
also the part right above between her legs, could be rounded out a bit...i guess that would be called her stomach haha, like the lower region of it
just out of curiosity what is your avatar? it looks familiar but it might just be me

I made this avatar out of the Final Fantasy Advent Children trailer. He is one of the characters name Kadaj. If you want more info, you can go to the official website at: http://www.square-enix.co.jp/dvd/ff7ac/ or an affiliate website with good content at: http://www.adventchildren.net/
And hpslashluvr, thanks for the critique. I have noticed that breast part and will make the adjustment.
Fantastic work so far, very impressive! :) I really like the look of the face, she's got a nice neutral sense to her, not oversexed nor overly plain. I think my only concern with the model is that the belly seems much too flat - even a trim stomach has shape. I can see there's definition in your model, but I think it needs more. Good luck with the model, I'll keep watching this thread :)

Sorry for lack of updates... Not been able to work on this character because of school and stuff. But I've updated a little bit of it though. I haven't neglected it completely. I don't have the update pic with me now, so I'll have to post that some other time...
Will be back soon with an update!
Peace!

Ok, here's the update...
I just reworked the breast and the stomach area. I'm having a little trouble around the shoulder area and how to build it. The neck area looks like it needs to be worked more too, now that I look at it... I also started to work on her back. It's still nothing good to show at the moment, lol... So yah, here it is. Any critiques or comments will be helpful. Thanks!!

What?! No replies?!?! Yeah... I know... I haven't updated in a while... The project has been on a giant hiatus lately... don't know when I'll be getting back to it... Hopefully soon...
But thanks for all of the comments and crituques I've gotten so far...
Looking good.. Waiting for updates!

Well... after a long time of thinking and gathering inspiration, I've been finally been able to get back to my project. I finally added temporary arms and legs that will be changed later. They're just there for references and such... Her back was barely touched, so it's kinda flat and bare, lol... I had the most trouble with working the topology for her shoulders and making it flow smoothly/organically into her forearm. After a few hours of cutting, removing, and more cutting, I was finally able to get an end result that I really like. So, now it's up to you guys for the comments and critiques. They are most appreciative. Thanks!! Enjoy!!

something about the back curvature looks off to me...but then again you said you haven't worked on it much...and what do i know, my back is messed up from sitting here too long... :)
also her neck could be a teeeeeeeeeny bit thicker IMO from the side view

hey peaxio, enjoying your work. i've been trying to figure out what's wrong with the back of her head, and i think it may just be your neck. checking a couple of references, may i suggest thickening it up? substantially from front to back, and marginally from side to side. if you thicken it the insertion will move up the back of her head a bit. but try not to mess with it too much, though as the shape is really nice and feminine. keep it up. i speak mainly as an observer of the human form and not so much as a modeller...

Hey! More updates from me... This is a first... it's usually about a month or 2 before I post again, lol... Fixed up the neck and back like suggested... Thanks for the critiques!!
Anyway, just finished adding the hands, feet, and worked on her back a little... sorry for the bad lighting...

Just working a little bit on texturing... I don't know what it is... but it just doesn't look right to me... The texturing is not finished though, but with it... it just doesn't make her look right anymore... I don't know what it is... I think she looks older than what she's supposed to be... which is around 17 - 20. I need some help... Any suggestions people?
http://dreaming-forest.itgo.com/ArtofDestiny/wip_texture01.jpg
For those who are just tuning in... She's modeled in 3D Studio MAX with polygons. The texturing is just a diffuse and a little bit of specular, and some very weak 3 point lighting... Gonna be modeling her clothing and hair once I get her body done... Well... any critiques or comments will be greatly appreciated... Thanks!

Great modelling work with this. I think her face is wonderful.
As some of the other people mentioned the ears still aren't quite convincing from a three quarter view. Something about her earlobe looks a bit funny. From the side it looks fine but I know how hard it is to get it looking perfect from 3 dimensions.
The nose is well within normal proportions but does look a bit flat from the side profile.
The texturing's coming along well although Peddy might be right about the low eyebrows.

i rather think it's more the eyes are too far apart, just a tad.
but it's all right, i think it gives it character
you might try raising the "hairline" a little, even if it is just for placement
