Thanks for the update, Fat-Fish.
Hhm another week huh... Is good, that way I don't have to bust my ass to get my pedestal done :)

By the way, your character is starting to look better every time!

@ JValdes: nice detailing you've been doing
@ denis-artist: great little touch-ups

Good news that the competition still continues.

Alexzavr: Looks really great!

denis: really like the style you have :)

Velkin: can't understand why you don't like the way it looks :D I think it's awesome

everyone else too is doing great, and now an extra week to make them even better :)
And I'm of glad for the extra time, should be able to do the pose and pedestal now :D
my textures are at this point now, still a lot to do, so I'm happy I can sleep tonight :)

@Monawa Cool. Try the curve (if you're using photoshop) on the skin for a little more contrat. I would try to add a little bit of color, but it might be my taste.. I tend to over-saturate stuff sometimes

@denis-artist Awesome work, man. great entry. the only modification I would consider is the proportion of the CGsociety logo, It looks like it should be a little wider.. But it might be the angle.. congrats

I'll make some more comments tomorrow..

Guys I have a question. The rules states no baking of light info. Does that mean if I want to texture light illuminating the body itself its not allowed?

yup that illumination on the face is texture. I was juz wondering if its legal. Technically speaking its baking light info into the texture.

P.S hey harlequin02 ur Michael right?

Very glad of the extra time. Few relaxed experiments with spec and lights to break from painting. Screenshotted out of Maya with high quality rendering and viewport shadows.

h-edition : shaun also known as shaunik ? that bloody shaunik ? haha how's he ? is he still modeling ?
err. . . yea i was wonder about that too. . .
Phantus : i kinda like the leg armor look awesome ! cant wait ur full texture, suggestion: make your microphone more ermm . . . futuristic if you can .
s69192 : looks CUTE !
AndreyAndre : wow you are fast my friend ! and it's looking good too !
TitForTat : nice ! she look arrogantly pretty ! may be you can put some dirt or burn or scratch so it might be look like she is a combat mage, and she like to burn something ! (i think)
Monawa : creepy ! but it's cool ! that's more like a corrupt i think.
denis-artist : my fav finaly u change your mind. looking awesome mate !
sakaH : she look deadly ! more spike from somewhere i think, may be she become more deadlier.
Jae-Keum (http://forums.cgsociety.org/member.php?u=36478) : damn ! that's creepy ! btw you model your right hand that way ? idk man it's like . . . weird. its like it's right hand not part of your model. i think. BUT it looks good !

here's mine, preparing for final image submission. render with maya softwere. I kinda like it but is it abit dark ?

@ harlequin02: Nice pose and angle. Yes, it's a bit dark, but personally I like that and it kindof fits with your character, I suppose. Just one thing: The top left seems a bit too bright to me. I'ts nice to have some subtle variation in your background, but I just don't see any reason why that corner should be that bright. Plus it draws away attention from your model.

@ panthus: it's coming along pretty good. No real comments, just hoping to see you break up that torso and waist section a bit.

@ s69192: cool concept. seems like a more "cute" version of a shadow. Always nice to counter stereotypes :) You still have some time, should be possible to finish.

@ AndreyAndre: The small stroke of bright lighting on the edge is cool, but I'm just wondering: you've put so much detail on the model, why not lit it a bit more (i.e. on the legs?)

@ TitForTat: This one is turning out really nice. Like the art style and technical execution of the character. If you want some critiques, here goes:
- The flame/magic effect on the staff seems a little blurry
- The inner surface of the pedestal with the tiles and the symbols is great, but the outer ring of the pedestal does'n seem to match with the rest of the character and pedestal. The texture seems some very grainy concrete or something and that just seems to clash with the more cartoony style of the rest. It might benefit from another texture, and with maybe some painted, chipped of edges?

@ Jacanarias: It's a nice idea to do some kind of a black-raven thing, and contrast that with fiery coloured bits, nothing wrong ith that paleette in se, but right now it's hard to read what's the purpose, or the material of the fiery tentacles and how it fits with the rest of the creature....

new update:

85% done ,sculpting a specific pedestal to fit this character, finalized using simple light in maya for render, the result is not bad. created a rig for him to pose ..

things to do next:
-touch up all muscles textures. (untouch yet)
-touch up the back textures.
- start work on the Spec map
- try a few different pose.
- fix the hair
- add more color to the face.
- some season effect for the skull.
- solve seams.
- solve the weight.

test pose and test render ( Try to pose him to look like a flying Skull <long hair and the chest skull>. -- thats the whole idea of it )

h-edition (http://forums.cgsociety.org/member.php?u=443681)- Hey henry, great to see you are able to work on your character on time, and thanks for the comments... let's work hard.
denis-artist - awesome model and really cool color and textures you have there, love those light effect and the believable mechanism at his back.
Jail (http://forums.cgsociety.org/member.php?u=443622) - good progess so far.. should have enough time for the details now.. keep on.: )
panthus (http://forums.cgsociety.org/member.php?u=74789) - your character is improving in every now update you have.. great job.
harlequin02 (http://forums.cgsociety.org/member.php?u=419721) - great you finally complete the textures.. think you can add a very soft light to brighten up the details alittle.
Monawa (http://forums.cgsociety.org/member.php?u=291534) - Keep on... going to be done soon.... good progress.
TitForTat (http://forums.cgsociety.org/member.php?u=369517) - good progess.. think drop or paint a shadow on the pedestal sure helps her to stand firm on the floor.i likr the pose you have there, very natural.
AndreyAndre (http://forums.cgsociety.org/member.php?u=410851) - wow.. that is tons of details going on... great to see it in textures.
Fat-Fish (http://forums.cgsociety.org/member.php?u=419202) - pose looks good so far.. like the texture you did for the wings.
lorez (http://forums.cgsociety.org/member.php?u=168855) - hey, he is almost done.. the hair look good in the unreal test.. keep on!
Alexzavr (http://forums.cgsociety.org/member.php?u=130055) - i think your 1st read is good.. but 2nd or 3rd read ( wire, side view, back view) can be rearrange alittle for the composition ... but your model and textures looks great!
Ameron (http://forums.cgsociety.org/member.php?u=228105) - color looks great.. can play with different color for the pedestal to pop the character more, now his leg some how blend to the pedestal.
Jae-Keum (http://forums.cgsociety.org/member.php?u=36478) - really great model.. very good idea and skill.
Velkin (http://forums.cgsociety.org/member.php?u=427436) - thanks for the good feedback, will look into it, your model coming along nicely, the pose makes him look even better, i like the 2nd pose.
EsoiHellsun (http://forums.cgsociety.org/member.php?u=442903) - hey looking good, cool pose also...but don't forget to add the forums logo : )
Zoox (http://forums.cgsociety.org/member.php?u=131483) - very nice pose.. i love the way you design your pedestal, simple and work well.

Update on texturing. Its going slow. The tri count is now at 2899, leaving me very few space for further changes.

I removed all the chinese characters so it doesn't look so much like a tin chinese deity. I am still trying to add some japanese tech feel into it.

I added the laser beam, because I am really bored :P Nah its not part of the design but I might add it for some effects on the presentation.

http://i86.photobucket.com/albums/k86/dreammh/kuoryuuwip4.jpg

My friend suggested a holographic head, which I feel is a good idea to balance out the design abit more. But its tough to get the patterns to work on the UV.

JCanarias: The color palette looks cool. Just my 2c on the design. Perhaps I would make the legs less human.

KingstonZ: I like the second pose alot gives him character. The final rollout image is great :) Thanks for the encouragement.

AndreyAndre: Nice model would love to see the details of the textures up close. I think you are safe with whatever you do to the pedestal as long as there are no objects that the character can pick up and use.

@KingstonZ: I like the second pose\angle, but the problem is one can't see that his hair is very long. You had one good angle on one of your previous wips (from ZBrush I think), where his hair were more visible. Great work!

@AndreyAndre: I like it, but some more contrast on the texture would be great.

@denis-artist: Looking good :thumbsup:

@TitForTat: Well, first of all I think her torso is too long for a human and pelvis is too narrow. Metal elements on her arms and legs are too bright. Her arms are little bit shorter than they usually are. Good work on the face.

@s69192: Cool concept. Epesially the one where he holds a weapon.

@Fat-Fish: Things on the last WIP looks alot more interresting. The screenshot on the right is my favorite. Really good pose and angle.

@Alexzavr: Looks great, but I think rules says we can't have more than one image of textured model on the beauty shot.

@lorez:
...@velkin -looks nice. great work. love the lighting. i like the step pose but would like to see him in a "stalker mode" moving down stairs hands out more in ready position like he could grab someone or something or he is "feeling the air", and put the head up almost looking over his shoulder like he might of heard something.. looking down like that makes him look akward like he cant see because his scarf is too big...

I can't raise his head higher, his anatomy and stuff on the back does not alow that, sorry  And It is good that he looks awkward. He supposed to look like that. He's just a test "newborn" cyborg model. I even tried to make him look vulnerable and touchy but failed by obvious reasons :) .

I think that applies to the extra 12 images slots we are given to upload. I believe the final presentation image may include various angles of the character. That's how I intepret it anyway.

When the site was still online, last thing I read, was there was an example showing what the submission could be.

As I understood it, just one final presentation image, which included just one rendered view of the character, nothing else, except name, race, contact details and logo.
Besides that, the possibility to upload 12 construction images, containing wireframes, texture sheets, concept art, wip stuff etc.

That's the way I'm planning to do it, until officially told otherwise.

When you look around the other forums, some people are doing it this way, while other people still do it the old way, with textures and wireframes included their presentation image.

That kinda defeats the purpose of us trying so hard to unwrap and texture our models nicely when all we show is one single angle. We could've all modeled and project UV to camera.

Final presentation image should include texture sheet, wireframe, and full colored model. Posing model is optional, and adding a pedestal is optional

Yep that's the exact opposite of what I said. :)
But that link is pretty old, those were the rules at the beginning, maybe they changed.
I really could swear that after some time, they put up an example on the submission site which had only the character itself....

@denis-artist: looking really sweet!

@harlequin02: its a animated .gif file I use Aoao video to picture converter to make them from a screen capture from fraps :) it takes a few steps but has lots of control of the end product.

@Jae-Keum: Awesome work! can't wait to see more. really like the logo placement and integration.

@TitForTat: looking good! my one thought is though the stage yellow?orange is abit bright kinda steals the focus, just a thought.

zooks: ah~ ill look further to it. thx for some hint ! look great though ! may be more skin texture ermmm. . . . is that suppose to be a corrupted human or something else ? because if it is a corrupted human it might be a good idea to give human skin color so it give the idea where it originated, just and idea =p * peace

Hey Ryan, thanks! I saw the cool work you and Peter are doing and figured I'd give it a shot too. Hopefully I'll have enough time to get this guy completed by the deadline, but I see a few sleepless nights coming up.

Anyhow, here's what I have so far. I decided to go with small plates for the armor, but I still have to figure out a quick and reasonable looking way to fake out the lacing between them.

If you are generating map for painting over, how about generate one lacing map then duplicate and place them over the plate texture?

@harlequin02: looking cool, my one thought is though it's very dark your image. hard to see the details of the model.

Alright so here's a little update, started working on the spec map and cleaned up his wrinkles a bit ;) still have to fix some seams and such but i'm pretty happy with where this guys going now :) I was thinking I might add grass between the rocks of the stage... any thoughts on it?

Alright so I just wanted to see what grass would look like so I did this very quick test. the grass texture is just placeholder, but I think I kinda like it. gives the image more color variety I think :curious: the final grass would have more variety and maybe more beat up as if this was part of a battle field... Let me know your thoughts :)

AndreyAndre - nice color, you did it on time! great

Here is an update. Still a lot to add.. Just doing some marmoset tests to make sure it will work in the end.

I am having problems with my alpha maps inside of Marmoset. I was wondering if anyone has had this issue before?

Basically my alpha maps aren't rending anything behind the alpha parts of each mesh. For example I have ribs modeled out inside of my guys chest, but they do not render. I see them in the viewport of marmoset but when i hit f12 it does not render the alphas properly.

You can also see the bandage looking cloths hide part of the center blue cloth.

Any ideas?

I was able to fix my alpha maps. Everything had to be one mesh chunk instead of multiple mesh chunks.

Here is one with the ribs. Sweet! Time to go make these textures awesome!

P.S: I would keep the standing pose, It gives him more agressive look, like he had no need to move to show his skills. He's there, waiting, transmiting: "Ok, come here... in 2 seconds... game over" :D

-JCanarias : that's errm. . . a very cute comment i must say. THX ! glad you like it =D. but i still need to bring up more color got no idea why this render soooo gray. and your model are very unique beyond imagination, envy you ! keep working on it !
-DBriggs : looking great but your bloom is too much or you want it that way ?
-Tombery : ah finally looking good ! you might wanna give some effect for it is a technomage, if you still got polygon.
-shaunwho: that's fast ! you finish sculpt and make it low poly ?!
-Zoox : agree with kingstonz, but instead of grass i will rather make a volcanic environment. why ? because you creature texture is red and not much fur. and base on science furry creature usually live on forest or jungle, and their fur was provide them keep their body warm at night. then on your case you got no fur at all and that kind of animal usually live in a dry place like for example a snake usually can be found on the desert, and then you texture it's skin red so i think it would be better on volcanic setting, it give the idea that your creature adapting to it's environment. Just my thought =p . . .
-AndreyAndre : yea i cant find it too, awesome detail !

Thanks harlequin. I meant to add extra bloom. I thought it gave him a ghostly effect. I will mess with all of those settings a lot more once i finish the textures. =)

O.k, so he's turning out mostly as planned. I'm finding that im not having to make much compromise on design due to seams, so it's all going swimmingly. From here, I will switch to weapon and get a base textured, then spend a good day getting Spec, Glow, painted highlights and shadows; it'll be here that his face will start to become more alive...and I'll give him some attitude. Nails are placed holders at the moment and may be dropped. Im wanting to load up detail without making him apear too busy, but I also want to distinguish him from being just another 'foot troop', so I'll add in some ceremonial colours and decoration.

Looking good so far. Would love to see your design though.

If you are generating map for painting over, how about generate one lacing map then duplicate and place them over the plate texture?I don't have any real design, aside from that initial sculpt... didn't have time to try and scrawl something down. I like your idea for handling the lacing, I think that should work pretty well, and it'll save me a ton of time.

rtrska: ONI ?Yup, but a more chilled out, dignified Oni than the usual wild eyed snarling monsters :P

rtrska (http://forums.cgsociety.org/member.php?u=426856) - great sculptris work, Ive only played about with the app, I really want to sit down and do a thorough character with it one of these daysThanks! Sculptris is pretty fun to use, very straightforward compared to more complex apps. It has a bunch of limitations, but its capable of some nice results.

Wow, everyone is so far ahead of me, and the deadline is really coming up fast. Here's where I'm at right now:

http://imgur.com/v4Vkel.jpg (http://imgur.com/v4Vke.png)

I'm going to try and get the rigid parts modeled up tonight. The armor "skirt" should be fairly easy. The shinpads shouldn't be too hard, I think I've finally got a good idea for how I want them to look. The pants, belt, and other soft cloth like things should be done tomorrow, and I'll try and get the lowres done that night as well. That doesn't leave me much time for texturing, so I dunno how good the paint is going to end up looking :p

@kingstonz: I agree, I'm still going to try and keep it grass I think but im going to play around with it a bunch to get it more rugged looking.

@harlequin02: My 1st thought was to do a lava glow coming up on the rocks, I'll try and test that out. The reason I moved away from that 1st thought was that I wanted him to seem like he wasn't in his normal surroundings and that he was on someone else's home turf and out fighting. like he was in a pretty place and pardon the pun... but "corrupting" it lol cheesy yes ;) but that was my thought anyway lol

So I didn't have much time today but I was just testing out trying to make my stage look more like something bad "is" or "has" happened to the land since my little dude got there... so I added blood spatters, and I was playing around with the grass blade sizes trying to make him seem smaller, like 4' ish anyway thanks again for the comments, tomorrow I'll test out a bunch more ideas with your comments in mind :)

may be it's the angle, he render it total front view i think

DBriggs : I would suggest darker a bit your texture so your glow give more contrast. i think. btw you said you wanna make it a ghostly feel on you character ? i think give a smoke or something instead gloom.

Zoox: ah yes now with your explanation it make sense.

rtrska: awesome ! new style of ONI ! but where is your direction ? if you wanna achieve eastern ONI might be good idea less western style on your bust * just a suggestion.

@harlequin02- i would suggest a really dark background almost black, to cut the contrast and to bring out the detail in your character. i get that its a "shadow" but its too dark to see any of the details. it just looks black. the silhouette has some nice details, introduce a rim light ( blue/purple to contrast your warm light). it will help bring those silhouette details out again against a dark/black background.

Here's Fred's anwsers to that:

Jail & belich: Thanks guys! I'm still grinding away at this guy, hopefully I can get him done.

I've got the lowres on its way, but this 3k triangle limit is trickier than I had expected. I'm still within budget, but I think my silhouette needs work in a bunch of places, so this is gonna take a while. I think I've got the color scheme mostly nailed down in this quick paintover. His "socks" will be a dark color, to help ground him, but I'm not sure if it'll be dark brown or what yet.

which is true or false ?

1- Final presentation image should include texture sheet, wireframe, and full colored model. Posing model is optional, and adding a pedestal is optional (pedestal may use its own set of unlimited triangles and textures). If a pedestal is added, it must contain no objects that character can pick up and use.

2-You may NOT:
3d, show additional final presentation images of your model at different angles. You are only allowed to show "ONE" final image. The extra 12 images are to be used solely for demonstrating the creation of your single main image.

so im doomed ? or not ?

Ok, finally got him textured and with weapon. Short sleep then onto face, feet, highlights and lowlights and a spec map to boot; maybe some glowing eyes. @harlequin02 The 2nd clause is only for the additional 12 wip images you can upload. Just so you can't create 12 more presentation images and confuse people; those 12 are supposed to be construction shots only. The single presentation image can include textures and wireframe and additional angles if you like. Refer to EsoiHellsun's post on previous page for the link to GA forums and the rules clarification (post#60 and post#59 for 2 examples of final presentation images).
The same thread has a link to a realtime EST clock if you need to check from a different timezone.

Hey guys, I think this is going to be the final for me. I don't quite understand why everyone is still following the old rules when we're now allowed up to have up to 12 additional images where we can put all of our textures, wireframes etc. Maybe I've got something wrong? I know the rules page still shows the old rules, but on the submission page it clearly says we can... I've decided to go with the flow just in case though:

Been a while since I posted, see things have stepped up even further since I've been away. Haven't had much time to play with the textures other than today, so any feedback would be awesome before I get my final bits together...

Love some of the 'construction' images, especially denis-artist and zoox. Also velkin, that final look sick!

Can anyone tell me how I can take screenshots in Marmoset with an alpha?

Looking nice.

Under Materials -> Use Alpha Testing, check Use Alpha to Coverage. That is if your texture format includes an alpha channel.

I meant with rendering the on screen image, so I can add my own background, my textures have alphas already thanks though ;)

Edit: Nevermind, I figured it out, was just being stupid, it automatically does it! :banghead:

Wow, incredible work guys! Sadly, I ran out of time. Serves me right for trying to do a few weeks work in about 5 days :P

For what it's worth, here's how far I got. I was actually somewhat hopeful that I'd get at least something finished but some technical stumbling blocks did me in, as I thought they might.

I'm still gonna finish this guy off, he's too far along to drop now.

Yes...so much more I could have achieved with another week. No time for rigging of posing, very basic spec map, bad render and poor presentation submission. Will try harder next time but found it to be a great warm up.

Well all of you have done awesome in getting your final images in.I have fallen short in doing so but I figure i'd post what I did get done.Still in maya and still some texturing to be finished.I'm happy with my character so I will continue and finish him.

@kingstonz- very cool concept drawings, I like your model alot but the hair throws me off.Realy cool idea though and good job getting it done.

Everyone has posted some awesome work. Congratulations to all that finished. Unfortunately for me, I did not. I just tried to do too many new things at once. But because of that, I learned a lot in this short period of time, and am excited for the Dominance War main event.

Here is what I had done up until the deadline:

http://img526.imageshack.us/img526/812/texturewip2.png
turntable (http://img715.imageshack.us/img715/7438/96s.mp4)

The final model came out to a cool 2980 triangles. I plan on finishing the model to the contest's specifications. However, now that the time constraint has been lifted, I have a bit more freedom in exploring different methods. I will post any future updates on this model in a personal sketchbook thread.

That is not very important I am afraid.

brandonlafrance, you have some good stuff going on in there. The stuff that isnt working like your cage and the textures are things you can fix with a couple of good tutorial dvds. From memory I think Eat3d has some good ones on this subject. They dont go as low as 3000 tris but you will get the idea.

Keep doing, keep showing your stuff.

The comment above mine is also useful. The poster is helping you.

Some really great pieces in here. I also didn't manage to finish in time, below is where I got before the contest. I'm going to continue working on it in the next few weeks and try to get a decent portfolio piece out of it.

As I said in my first post, this was my first attempt at a project of this scope. I came here expecting feedback and criticism, and I appreciate whatever of it I can get. I am not new to the world of art, I know from experience that criticism is one of the best teachers. The more honest and direct it is, the better. However, I think all good artists know the difference between good criticism and bad trolling. I know that the piece needs work, but i need you to be more specific, andreandre.

With that out of the way...

Thank you for the advice and kind words, Kanga. I have all ready come up with a huge list of areas that need improvement and the texture is definitely on the top. I was cutting corners at every step in order to save time. I am going back through the process, from concept to textures spending time on the areas that need it most. I will post updates to my personal sketchbook thread in the artistic anatomy section.

I knew the textures needed a lot of work, but could you touch on some of your specific complaints with the cage? I can see that the silhouette is a bit boring, but I was about to give myself a pat on the back for the topology. With the cage resolution so limited, I was planning on putting most of the detail in the texture.
