anyone run into a weird error with after effects/macs
the system will hang until you move the mouse and then proceed for awhile, then hang until you move the mouse again.

this happens when rendering.
it also happens when copying files from one firewire to another.

possibily it is a firewire drive problem.

g4 dual 1.25 gighz with 3 external firewire drives hooked up.
all data for after effects is working from the firewire drives.

my guess is something wonky is going on with firewire.

any IDEAS?

THANKS
peter

i need a little more info to answer--

i work on after effects constantly on both pc & mac-- every so often ae hangs for a bit & the mouse freezes-- i just wait about 5 sec then it recovers itself-- happens on both platforms-- happens mainly on pretty heavy files-- in half & third resolutions too as well as full--- but i never have a problem that the program just hangs and i have to move the mouse to recover---doesn't sound like this is the same problem--

question-- while rendering are you hitting caps lock to stop the window from generating each frame?

question--- maybe i am not understanding you correctly--why are you linking files which are not on your local hardrive? is it a disk space problem? i have found that aftereffects sometimes does strange things when you are in this situation-- both rendering and compositing-- this is asking for trouble. if at all possible you should copy all files to your local & work from there--- if you have to do this for networking reasons--- well--- that is unfortunate.

firewires are very finicky and weird-- both my firewires worked fine until about 2 months ago-- one day i plugged in the camera & no go-- they were both shot-- no response at all--- after i reformatted a few weeks later both ports are up & running again, like nothing ever happened. i have done some research online & from what i can gather they are unpredictable. good luck!
