View Full Version : Sub-D = super low performance?!

What is up with that! (Sorry, perhaps this is a noob question..)
I recently converted to Maya so I’m considered a noob

-Now.. How come when i convert my mesh from polygons into sub-d, then switch into "Polygon Proxy mode", the performance is horrible? Extruding a polygon has a 15 second update delay! Same with moving a vertex. So please tell me, what’s the point of that? I've heard people model in sub-d from the start.

-Also, on a side question. How come when I make a crease in sub-d mode and then convert back to polygons, the crease isn’t there anymore :surprised Is there a way to make good clean creases in poly? ( beveling edges gets dirty and sometimes even buggy)

yes...it´s "normal"....mayas Sub-D´s are very slow...better use CPS (look for it at highend3d.com) for modeling...

I think SubDs are not meant to be edited in normal mode.

Best workflow is (if you really want to use them) to build a standard Polygon basemesh and once you are happy with it, you could convert it to subDees and then use different Levels to get more detaill.

And regarding the Buggy bevel ... :)

Just take a look at this (http://sebastian-thiel.bei.t-online.de/BPTDocs/BPT_bevel.htm)

like Byron said, its only for the finer details on 'finished' meshes. well thats what i use it for. Also i think SubD and Poly Proxy give a similar smoothing so to see roughly the results of a subD try using Polygon Proxy, for the time being.
