View Full Version : Character: Moria orc swordsman
MoD_Legion 10-07-2003, 10:39 PM Hi,
This is my first high poly/second character I'm building atm. It started out after watching TTT I wanted to model an Moria orc swordsman helm but I couldnt get the shape right, so I decided to build an Orc head to fit inside it, but then I figgered as long as I'm busy anyways I might as well put a body under it. End goal is a fully modeled, textured and animatible Moria orc swordsman (kinda like the buste, more or less exactly).
I finished the first pass of the base orc mesh after that I went back to rework topology in most area's (as it was pretty poor at times :P). I'm mostly done with the head now (cept for breaking up symmetry, but I'll leave that as the last step before texturing) so I wanted to get some feedback on my work.
What i'm looking for mostly is feedback on topology and general form of the mesh. (Any other crits are welcome as well though :)
I'm using Maya 5.0.

Pics can also be found through here (http://www.shrunkworks.com/Images/Orc/Orc.html) or follow the link in my sig, the site contains some more images also showing the body but I'd like to focus on the head as I'm working on the rest atm but feel free to comment on the rest if feel the need. (and yes I know the body looks to human, but thats cause it is :P)
Plz dont mind the crapness of the site, i'm not a HTML coder :P.
(Site might be down all together at times, brinkster has been switching it on/off randomly lately my apologies in advance).

Nice, nice...everyone's modeling an orc these days...*sniff*...maybe I'll get around to it one of these days. Are you gonna animate it? First off, the shoulder blades look funny...sort of flat or something. The head looks too big in some pics but not in others, so maybe it's just the perspective. Ah shoot. My computer just froze and your webpage won't open. Talk to you later then. ;)
Hi there
Three observations for you:
Not much to say about the head... it's ugly ;)
The only thing I notice immediately is the flat space under the nose. In movies where you're trying to transform some poor little fellow into an orc that's how I would think the nose would be hidden. But now we're in a computer and such details need not be considered so I would put that flat space to some use and do some kind of nose-work there.
When looking at the body it looks like the arms are detached from the body - they are too far out compared to the chest. Either push the arms inward a litte or build a more V shaped chest (I recommend pushing them inwards).
The knees look awfully thin when viewed from the side.
...well that's my $0.02
Cheers!

Tnx for the feedback guys, this stuff is gold.
The arm thing is fixed, I originally modeled them straight down beside the body but then rotated them but that moved them a bit outwards but they look better now. I also reworked the back muscle and shoulderblade a bit and it looks a lot better now imho.
U have a good point about the nose jdj, but I'm kinda lacking in the creative department but I might give it a try later though cause u made a valid point.
I'm working on the arms atm fixed the flow of the muscles and making them a bit less muscular as I actually wanted the orc to be a bit skinny looking. I also wanted to put in some more defined abs but I cant get it looking right.
I'll keep the knee comment in mind when I come to the legs.

the bicepe seams to be to large and I thing the forarm and hands are to small really good though
Hi again
U have a good point about the nose jdj, but I'm kinda lacking in the creative department but I might give it a try later though cause u made a valid point.
Well - I think the general shape is good, just small alterations to make the area "un-flat". Like - the guy needs some nostrils for instance and perhaps if you try to push the upper lip a bit inwards (from the side view) so that you get a small definition of a nose... ah well. rambling again.
Cheers!

Finally got some time to post an update, between almost cutting off a piece of my finger (little accident at work o_0), playing ufo: aftermath and halo and the end of the school period I didn't have much time to spend on this.
I finished the arms and chest, I reworked allot of the topology for the muscles in the arm so the lines follow them better and I also changed the back some more, pulled out the shoulderblades a bit and made the neck muscle blend in more with the blade. I made another full body render and a close up of the hand so I'd really appreciate any feedback ppl have on them. The knee's are a bit wider to now.
Atm I'm working on the feet a bit, the toe's in particular after that I think I'll start the armor \o/.

Finally! My new hosting is ready and I just uploaded everything to my new space.
Its comes equiped with its own domain www.shrunkworks.com and will finally allow me to hotlink stuff \o/. I changed all links above to clicky links.
No updates yet though, studying for tests for next week everyday and during study brakes playing planetside although next week I will have plenty of time as all test are in the first half of the week.
Anyways, no replies still? Somebody must have something to say, it can't be *that* good :p.
Damn u lurkers!

i really like the head.
the body is a different story... it looks too human like..
try messing with the proportions a little... maybe make his arms longer or legs shorter or somethin... cause right now it kinda looks like an orc head thrown on a human body. Maybe give him an exageated chest, or super skinny or somethin a little more defined.
like i said before the head is a cool design jsut needs to be tweaked a little

Ok I got some updates, I managed to get some work done tonight.
I made the arms a bit longer, the legs a wee bit shorter, reduced overal muscle volume, made the ribs visible (lots of new topology on the chest now) shortened the neck a bit, added a belly button + some abs and more stuff.
I'm still trying to get the body to look more orc like. Also by making the arms less thick its looking like the shoulders are a bit to far out again but I'm not 100% sure if it looks odd or not.
Any ideas about making it look more orcish are greatly appreciated to!

Btw the frontal/side/back renders are ortho renders as are they in all the old pics.

Dude go back to your study books :D like myself! Eehh what am I doing here? Am I currently on CGTalk? Where am I? I am studying :| logics
no kiddin, you have a little strange wireframe on the chest. Make them flow. If you pick one polygon you must be able to follow that one along a path. This partially means you need to get rid of the triangles. This way, adding "orcish" things will make those things look organic and thus believable.
the model's cool by the way. No idea how to make more orcish, go see LotR for the 25th time :)

Pff, no more studying, only planetside :-( (stupid core combat expansion).
No triangles on the chest mate (I think u have been learning a bit to much :p) but u problably are talking about the stumach. The problem is I can get rid of most triangles but that would result in a lot of added geometry in places I dont want it making it harder to work with the model. I am trying to make the polylines follow the lines of the character but If that means a triangle I'll just use a triangle instead of forcing quads (for reason mentioned above).
and watching LoTR prolly wont help either, cause they use human actors with a orc mask pulled over the face so no orcish looking body's there :(. (although it is a good excuse to watch it again :-P).
en wtf is een webjetzbutton :-S link werkt gewoon hoor :-S

Great looking model.
My one crit: The hands look too small. Now I'm no authority on any of the movies or anything, but even if the orcs have hands that small in the films (don't know, only saw each one once) make yours bigger.
Otherwise, he looks ready to fight. :) Clothes first please. :P

Argh lol, my thread was all the way down at page 4, serves me right for not posting any update for over 30 days but I was kinda busy with schoolish stuff.
Anyways, I sort of finished modeling the first undergarment of the orc's outfit. Its not to detailed but I think its wrinkly enough to be recognised as cloth. I might tweak some wrinkles some more (specially the back).
For people that have it, i'm just copying the stuff u see in the moria orc gallery photo shoot of the guy putting on a moria orc costume on the FoTR extended dvd, so there'll be another red cloth thingie going over this, then possibly a bit of chainmail and then the actual armor plates.
I folded the edges of the piece back, to make it look like it has some thickness to it, cause single sided poly's are you know, kinda flat.
http://www.shrunkworks.com/Images/Orc/Orc16.jpg
I also changed the proportion a bit more as ppl suggested. Legs where made a bit shorter, I lengthed the arms a bit, and made the hands bigger to. Especially the fingers which I made a lot longer. (Dunno if its that obvious from the pics though)
Greetz.

hey there, nice model!
To give the model a more orcish look i would change the body-posture. Imo u should add more "prehistoric" style to the model. Maybe just a little hunch would do it? Hm ... just an idea =)

Finally got around to doing some modelling again, so much going on atm (stupid school).
http://www.shrunkworks.com/Images/Orc/Orc17-Hand.jpg
and
http://www.shrunkworks.com/Images/Orc/Orc17-Leg.jpg
The leg armor isnt done though, especially the leg plate, the knee plate's (it's 2 pieces of plate) arent looking like I want them to look as well. There are straps as well on the backside but I dont feel like making more renders atm :P.
The glove is going to be made of leather, but that doesnt really show now as its still textureless.
@welshboy, changing the pose would definatly make it look more orcish but i'm going to leave the posing till i'm more done with modeling.
And I ordered the Moria archer polystirine figure last week and it should arive about tomorrow so I'm hoping I can copy some nice details from that.
Thoughts?
