View Full Version : How would I go about this?

Hey all,
I'm very new to modeling but feel I have been progressing decently for the time I have been learning. For the most part I have been able to self teach myself but Ive hit a bit of a hump that has been bugging me for a couple of days. To get to the point, I want to model a a Corinthian pillar which I have attempted various times but have ended up with basically a messy model that looks terrible. How should i go about it? I'm using Maya and have access to Mudbox, and here (http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/6/6a/Classical_orders_from_the_Encyclopedie.png) is the reference I plan to use (the bottom left one).

I'd start by building the base and underlying column structure, which is the easiest part. Then, use splines or extrude along a path to form the curved support elements. Then, add some edges along the length and extrude slightly to add the ridges. The ornately-carved floral supports should be modeled once, then instanced around the column. The rest of the floral detail around the column could be added using alpha stamps or stencils (I use ZBrush's projection master for this kind of detail, so not sure what Mudbox calls this tool).

Here's a good example of a Corinthian pillar, with wireframe overlay, to give you an idea of edge flow.
