hm, don't know very much about hdri, never tried it but my guess is that you have to do a production render, did you try that? Besides I've had some very strange problems with tiff images, don't know if that has anything to do with that..

On a Mac there seems to be 2 types of readable TIFF's. .tif, and .tiff. Also, In photoshop when saving a .tif, or .tiff which ever it is there is always a popup that reminds me that older .tiff readers don't support .jpeg compression.
So it could be a compatibility problem within your applications .tiff reader, or you can try to (this alone works on the Mac sometimes) Just change your images file extension from .tiff to .tif. Or vice-verse. Like I said that has worked on my Mac on a few occasions.
I would also try to run off a few frames in a different extension, or file type if you can, or change the type of compression that you app is rendering your image out in.
Trouble shooting? Buy a bigger gun. :)

HDRI doesn't work with the maya software renderer, you'll have to use Mental Ray.
Just assign your tif to the texture you want, maya will show a little error, because it can't read it (the icon will be black too).. but Mental Ray will read it just fine (when you render out).
