Great character Shawshank. Wish i could work out how to make colouring look so easy.

Not entirely sure what this is but it just happened.

Initial sketch - 10-15mins.

Mucking about trying to colour it - 1hr

Decision to give up - 3seconds.

Hey bromwich,

Ha cool! I like your pose ~ so dynamic. I like the size contrast between the character and the butterfly.

Someone once gave me some really good advice about colouring linework. The trick is to not worry about colouring 'inside' the lines, but use a large brush and describe the form with large swathes of colour. You can make these large strokes interlock over each other, and they layer up each one describing the form. You can block things out real quick.

Hopefully that makes sense.

I made this example just now.

Great little tutorial Shawshank. I learned how to work that way not long ago from this guy:

Your illustrative tutorial reminds me a lot of his tutorials on that page.

GIMP - 30M - Bad Religion & Millencolin

Here's my conquering Kull at 30 minutes.
To save time I went straight from rough sketch (you can kinda see it in there) to paint, skipping the line art all together.

Seeing as how Kull is a Robert E. Howard creation, I instantly thought of Frazetta when I saw the topic.
