Hey everyone,

I just downloaded Wings 3D just to see what it was....and all that I can say is WOW!!!! Amazing program. Extremely intuitive interface and command keys. Absolutely amazing. I never knew such an amazing app like this existed!:applause:

So, my question is this. How can this work with Cinema? Do I simply model in Wings and export as .obj to Cinema? Will this work?

Thanks for your help,
-Josh

Yes that is what you will do but watch out for the Ngons C4D does not have them yet so you will either have to fix the ngons in C4D or model in wings without ngons.

dFaris,

Great! Thanks.

Well, all I can say is you must be smarter than me. ;) I downloaded it a while ago and intuitive isn't a word that comes to mind in my learning process. I'm not putting it down. I can see the potential is huge and hell, hard to beat free, right? Anyway, just my 2 cents. -- 3d_e

ngons = polygons with more than 4 sides. C4D supports only tris and quads.

I believe n-gons typically imply polygons with greater than 4 sides. From what I understand, the advantage to this is that when you need to create new geometry on a polygonal mesh, you will be less likely to create tons of triangles as borders between polygons change due to these cuts.

i see you attend SCAD, what 3D software do they teach there ?

Sebek27,

Yep. I'm at SCAD. Have to say that SCAD is one of the best in the country when it comes to 3D. They teach basically everything here: Maya, XSI, Houdini, Max are the main ones. No Cinema 4D that I have seen. Roughly 600-700 very high end workstations each packed with state of the art programs in the Computer Art building alone. I'm mainly trying to work with Maya and XSI, and eventually I am going to start learning Shake and Inferno and some other highend compositing apps.

3D Explorer,

I really find Wings to be incredibly intuitive. 3 Button mouse navigation like Maya...quick transitions from points to edges to polys to object modes. Nice poly proxy mode. And any operation can be accessed via right clicking on the poly/edge/point/object and selecting the operation. And I find it nice how you can switch between differing ortho views by simply pressing x or y or z to get the associated view. Simply press R to reset to perspective. And all of this I simply learned in the first 5 min. So I'm sure there is much much more that I have to discover. My only complaint is the circuitous method of moving and rotating....you have to do these like any other method by right clicking, select Move, then select the axis. This is my only complaint. Anyway, this app is incredible. Lots of potential.

Hi Josh,

I love Wings3D. I make all organic my models with Wings.
As mentioned you must tesselate your object before exporting.
You can do this in face mode with right click. I set the
import/export scale to 100 in Cinema. And Wings is very
intuitive IMO. I wish I had its navigation in C4D CE.

have fun

You can shortcut key plenty of actions, and better yet you can switch to tweak mode and just move points, edge, or polys without right clicking, just click and move. You also can use the magnet in tweak, press 1 and then adjust falloff with the - or + key.

There is one down side to Wings is that it can't handle heavy models, so it will suffer from major slow downs to down right pauses. In which case I would recommend moving to C4D or Silo to finish your model.

Here is a WIP I started in Wings and have since moved to C4D. Clean up the Ngons before you move into to C4D or you will get some unwanted topology changes.

Sounds as if I didn't give it a fair shake. Maybe I should fire it up again. This was early on in my 3D experience so maybe I just didn't get it. Hmmm... -- 3d_e

you should try it again. oh course everyone is different. Im not half as good as tjnyc (took me 2 weeks to finish a halfway decent head) but it is fun to use.

Hey tjnyc,

I like that layout you have for C4D. Is that a basic layout or did you make that yourself?

A little of both.

you can customize your cinema 4d look however you want.

hell..you can make it look like lightwave/softimage

I found Wings to be a great little app, I imagine it's because the interface is very simple, and doesn't cause my noob brain to hurt too much.

My girlfriend asked me to show her how it works and she was making very basic models within half an hour, she'd never touched a modeller in her life until then.

As mentioned though, it does tend to freak out when the polycounts get high.

No C4D at SCAD, sorry to disappoint, but dont sleep on the flint and flame machines they got there! My only regret was not learning that software better. did they get an inferno too? right before i graduated they just had about 5 or 6 flames and a room full of flints. The best thing about the Flames is that so many students slack on them that you can get plenty of play. drop me a line.

Hey Trentdiggity,

So what year did you graduate? I'm almost certain they have an inferno here. Yeah. But if you want to be absolutely certain, you might want to post a message for jhromika or chad-d in the general discussions area. They've been here at scad longer than I have and can let you know for sure. But right after I get back from Tybee island this morning I am going to see a Maya seminar and then the VFX club meeting at Montgomery. Exciting stuff. Honestly, this is my first year, and Jared's too depending on who you ask:D Hi Jared:wavey: I'm trying to wade through all these foundation courses and in the meantime get a head start on all of the computer apps. Oh, and I didn't mention above that they also have lightwave here as well. Forgot about that one.

So, what do you do for a living? You have any luck getting a job right out of scad? Well, I'll take your advice literally and figuratively; I won't sleep on any of the flints and flames. Take care.

Hey Trentdiggity,

Went and checked today....I was mistaken. They still only have the flint and flame. Not inferno.
