but since not too many ppl citicised it, i'm gonna give it a try.

first, i think you've got too much of that 'haze/fog' effect around the edge of the(whatever it is)...
also, make the background a weeee bit more clear, i know you're going for that microscopic look with overwhelming DOF.

I wanna compliment on the 'subsurface scattering'(i believe its called), it really gives depth to the thing:thumbsup:

Actually I didn't use any SSS. The effect was achieved by using a double sided mat with transluescency and a falloff map in the diffuse and self illumination slots (MAX).

But yeah, nice picture there, it's fun how simple shapes can provide much in the ways of a satisfying image.
Next up you can go wild with the greeble plugin for MAX and a GI rendere, I understand that's a bit of a classic in the simple-shape genre :)

A geosphere with some faloff and faces beveled + meshsmooth + glow (VP) + DoF ?

Set up in 11 minutes (watch in hand) using max and Vray (disp mod helps).

Longer to render than modelize, in fact. :) My old PIII at home is dying.
