View Full Version : Power Booleans
tAstyBITs 05-30-2002, 09:09 AM When I was at E3 I came across the nPower Software booth. Apparently they made a functional boolean plug in for Max. It looks really good. They even have a free Trial Version.
Heres the web link.

I haven't tried the plug in but I thought I'd share this bit of info I got from E3
Hey if you download it and try it out let me know how good it works.:wavey:

i have tried it,but not impressed at all.
it fixed a max boolean problem(losing surfaces), not much esle did.the result is exactly the same with the max default booleans operater in some simple sence i tested.
i won't change my dislike of boolean coz both will make a dirty mesh.

I tried it aswell and I agree with nurpz for that it doesn't have any new features compared to MAX's booleans. It works fine though and I wasn't able to get it screw the mesh, except for some weird extra vertices here and there.

somewhat off topic but here it goes.,
how can i open holes in a poly object? Apart from boolean ops or deleting polys, is there any other way around? Specially if i want a complex shape as a hole?
I mean, i can erase polys and go by vertex and shape the hole but it must be a more efficient way...

hmm...noway to do that in polygon modeling.
you can use bump map or displacement though, but they also have their restrictions.

Hmm to answer the quoted question.
Compound Objects --> Shape Merge; you and use a spline object to trim a hole into geometry.
I don't know about using a bump map. If you can get a map to select faces then you might be able to get it to work.
It would be kinda cool to use a opacity map to trim/boolean geometry.
Mesh/Poly booleans will never be perfect... I know that power booleans is a great plugin and works very well - but the automated process of cutting/divided/joining edges will never be as good as it is in Nurbs (I am of crouse talking all Nurbs bar Max's here!).
Sumatra - Try this,
Create a spline that represents the hole you want to punch out of the surface.
Align it over the object you want to cut.
Select the object to be cut.
Go to Create > Compound Objects > ShapeMerge
Pick the spline.
Now check the radio-button labelled Cookie Cutter
You may have to invert/flip the result - and it has a lot of the problems associated with booleans, but it might work for you!
(Also, if you find that your hole is on the wrong side of the object you want to cut, flip it's normals)
Hope this helps!

Thanks for the info guys, shape merge gives a lil' bit meshy results though requires some spline tweaking and tweaking and tweaking..,
when it comes to holes i miss my solidworks modeller.., :)
