This is something amazing I had to share with the professional community. It started off as a simple bridge project for our in-house project "Son of the Suns" at SCIFI 3D (http://scifi3d.theforce.net) . But it has turned into a professional level of detail project to build the entire ISD.

Here are some pics but if you want to follow the full project visit the thread at SCIFI-MESHES.com (http://www.scifi-meshes.com) .

.... Wow.... That's incredible work. I've been waiting for Son of the Suns to come out and this is making me want it even more!

One thing though... I think you guys should work on that Yoda model... alot... I'm not saying this just for the fact that he doesn't look perfectly like Yoda. I'm saying it because he really needs a butt-load of work...

I went off the subject... Keep it up!

One thing people gotta remember about SOTS.. I don't know when it'll come out. I don't know if I should just put it out the way it is and upgrade it over time... or just wait. We really are very very short on character animation. It's hard to find people who have time to help... and even harder to find those who can do good character work. BUT everyday is like a release day to us b/c we're constantly showing work and releasing models. So even if it doesn't come out anytime soon there'll always be lots of stuff to look at.. and we'll continue to provide materials to support all the other amateur film makers out there. So in a way we are directly or indirectly involved in alot of other projects too.

I agree about Yoda. At the time.. he was the model available. That was 3 years ago or more that it was made.. and about 2-3 that the shot was put together. And one thing I can say for sure is the quality of work everywhere... has gotten so good.. that's the real reason it looks dated now. 2-3 years ago it was good. We have so much trouble just trying to finish it with a crew of 3-5 that seem to disappear every 6 months. Then I have to find another crew. I just doubt we'll have time to go back and redo anything. Plus Jay's YODA is on the website.. but it has to be reworked even more b/c the one in the trailer is actually Jay's from a "proprietary" version of LW. Plus this is more a ESB Yoda model. And it's kinda put into context in the scene of an EPI Yoda with Ani. So he really needs more hair at least.

One of the MAIN reasons I share alot of this stuff is to see if there are people out there who'd like to help.. or just donate things they have already built. We survive off the hour or two here and there that people contribute. Good luck.

There are some new "full-screen" shots like you are asking for at the SFM forum link at the top. Right now I can't get in there to put an image here. FS is at the third terrace now.

man, very impressed.....
the detail looks great, is it starting to really bog down and become hard to work with as yet?
also will you continue and build the whole ship with that much detail or model different bits and pieces for shots- maybe a hi res and low res...
oh also...got a wire.

p.s. I really like the corucsant? landing platform stuff as well.
cheers.

FractalSponge is doing it over at SFM. I'd ask him that. I think he's up to 650K polys w/o total optimization yet. he's anticipating like 1-1.5 million polys. It's really not that bad with current versions of MAX and the type of systems we have, with run-of-the-mill Geforce cards and stuff. He never did mention a render time.. but I've done stuff like this before in a minute or so. I wonder what will happen with GI shadows. We'd probably render one frame of GI shadows and composite it to the craft all the way thru an animation... unless there was some diff. kinda camera movement. I think we could get away with using one image for a shadow layer tho.

We're still debating.. but he will continue with the rest of the craft like this over time. He wants to just finish the upper hull for now so it could actually be used for a shot. We are talking about a 2nd version low-rez version too yes.

Just so you guys know the model is finished and now being textured. There are some really SWEET full-size images you have to check out. Really awesome modelling work. We're sharing the model with about 4 diff. people to work on conversions in Maya/XSI, LW, etc. I think the best pics are on page #35.
