Looks fantastic!
I really hope everyone's expectations do not damage the film, when it 's finally released... ;)

It is a beautiful book: Brian is a top guy and he's doing a great job on this.

If any of you are fans of the site, there are loads of lovely print-rez images you may have seen before (and like Expose, its many times better to see 'em in book form!) plus a whole bunch of new stuff you won't have seen.... I got my copy yesterday and I am loving it!!

:applause:

Get over there, buy some copies! Let's get Rustboy The Movie made!!!

Damn I was ready to buy this but with such a hefty price tag £36! I mean theres more important things to spend that amount on such as the new dvd indianna trilogy out this month. Besides from taking a peek at the 'look inside' much of the stuff is the same as on the website. However that said the artist in question is still a genius and I appreciate all his hard work - plus he's from Britain wow!

looks like a fantastic book.

any idea how long this "short film" is going to be?

vfx - that's no excuse! Trust me, the content of the book supercedes the website and it's just so damn lovely!

It's simple, buy the book, marvel at it's luxurious quality, then charge people £1 to look at it - 30 or so people later, hey presto! You've got your Indy money! :D

Sounds like a worthwhile investment into the independant film making community. Who knows, you might want someone to buy your book someday!

It is a lovely project and the book lives up to the standard you'd expect. Also, the profit from the book will fund the completion of the film, so you can take comfort in knowing you are helping an independent filmmaker when shelling out the pennies. ;)

The 3D glasses gallery is a nice touch too.

Recommended.

Looks great! What is the text in the book like? What does it talk about etc?

A brief overview...

Chapter 1 covers the origins of the project and Brian’s motivation with renders and storyboard images from the first Rustboy trailer.
Chapter 2 is about the design choices of the Rustboy character and has some lovely sketches and model sheets etc.
Chapter 3,4 and 5 cover the 3 distinct environments in the film, the mansion, the island and the ocean. Each chapter discusses the design choices for the respective area and is chocka block with concept work and renders.
Then there's the stereoscopic 3D gallery, which is cool.

It's more of a high quality production journal than an "art of" book. You could argue that you've seen it all on the website but there is a tonne of stuff in this book that's not posted online as well. Plus I totally agree with headengine that renders in printed form have a nicer quality.

Look cool, but that price is a bit too much for me at the moment, already buying an HDRI CD, Byron's polyTools; and some foxy posters for my room.. maybe buy it later on, does look very flash.

Just got my copy today and all I can say is: UTTERLY AMAZING. This project has always been a source of inspiration for me. If you can get the book get it. It's worth the money. I had to pay $77 if you include shipping and got one of the signed ones as well. This is definitely one of those books for your personal library.

Specifically the following:

Question:
Rustboy reminds me of the work of Tim Burton, and you must be aware of his Stainboy character, is this not a bit obvious?

Answer:
First of all, I'll freely admit to being an admirer of Tim Burton's work, and have no problems with the comparisons, but it's not quite as simple as that. The first version of Rustboy (including the name) has been in my portfolio for around five years, and was influenced by the illustrator Lane Smith, who's work I'd admired for many years before that. I'm sure that Burton would agree that he too was an admirer of Lane's work. In fact he subsequently used him for conceptual designs on James and the Giant Peach. The 3D version of Rustboy had also been around for about a year before Stainboy made an appearance online, so that was just an unfortunate coincidence, and a case of beating me to it as far as getting him online.

Just for interest sake:

Stainboy first made an appearence in the Tim Burton book "The Melancholy Death of Oyster Boy and Other Stories" published in 1997, ISBN 0-688-15681-9

The Rust boy book sure looks great. Whats the GSM on the paper?

Not sure on the weight exactly - but it's *heavy*, like Disney 'Art of... Books' heavy, which is great.

I do have to say that when I got my copy that I was really disappointed. The way the book was shipped was extremely poor and resulted in the book being damaged. The slipcover was all bent and torn and the binding was broken so that the first third of the book has tear marks on the pages.

I contacted the publishing company and they were more than happy to send me a replacement copy so all's well that ends well.

Rustboy to me still looks like it would do ok as a realtime game. The art is good for a game...but I dont see how conceptually or finish wise its worth going to print over.

The books distributed by Vanity publishing Inc.? ;-)
