"The wait is almost over. MAX PAYNE 2: THE FALL OF MAX PAYNE has gone gold.
Rockstar Games has announced that it has shipped off the code for its sequel to their award-winning 2001 action noir video game MAX PAYNE. The company expects that computer consumers will be able to buy MAX PAYNE 2 in North American stores starting on October 15 and in Europe on October 24. I loved the original Max Payne. This one looks to have pretty darn good "in-game" graphics:

The story-line sounds good too, I just hope the game play does not suffer from sluggishness.

my only problem with the new max payne is that he looks soo much damn older than the last game. :/
other than that :D looks great.
though hope the game still has the neat effects like part one did.( like on his trench coat.. nice shaders and stuff.
im not going to bother looking for more screenshots, but it looks quite cool from that one you posted.
i like the fact that hes so much different looking now.

Holy crap!
I wasn't expecting it nearly this soon... I guess I just assumed it would be out in several months. I loved the original Max Payne, and I'll certainly pick this one up.

I miss the old "who farted?" expression from the first Max Payne.

After what he went through in the first game I bet he "feels" older
when's Dead To Rights 2 come out :D

Yeah I always thought the original Max Payne really looked like some sort of maniac. He really looked like some force expression frozen in time, it made him look dangerous, but I think it matched the game's story. While in this one there is a love story, so he look more human/mature.
Anyway can't wait to play the game, I just hope the environments are varied.

should be good - but i swear he doesn't look at all like the same guy.

True, he looks a lot different, but that could be partly because he's not grimacing as much. Also, keep in mind that he's several years older, almost middle-aged.
ambient-whisper

a few years doesnt mean 20-30 :) which is how much older he looks..

Why Max Payne doesn't have the same face:
In-game explanation: None. The storyline is even set not long after the original Max Payne. People whined about this, but I think it gives him a more serious, suave look.
Real life explanation: The face that was used in the first Max Payne was the face of the script-writer, now since the first game made a huge hit, they could afford a real model.

I don't think Remedy has said how much older he is, have they? He was in his late twenties in the first game, and 15-20 more years would put him in his 40s-50s, which is about how old he looks now. Remember, he WAS headed to jail, and in Max Payne 2 he's back on the police force... some time had to have passed I suppose.

I read that they remodeled the face so they could animate facial expressions during gameplay. That plus they could now afford a real model.
Regardless, I still like the old face more. The new one has lost a lot of character.

Hey, sorry to resurrect an old thread, but I got Max Payne 2 earlier today, and wanted to post some impressions:
The graphics, physics, and gameplay are awesome, the plot is good, and the new weapons are great (The MP5 with miniscope is my favorite so far). I do miss the old look and voice of Max Payne, but the new one really isn't bad. Overall, if feels very polished, and they didn't even forget the various shows on the TVs in the game. :D
Anyway, I think I'm enjoying just as much (or more) as the original, so i would recommend it to anyone who liked the first, if only for the updated engine. Just make sure your computer can handle it, and if you're lucky, you might even get a t-shirt!
thanks, AGENT D - nice mini-review.

How fast is your machine Agent D?
I really want Max 2 but my machine is only a 1 Ghz. Thats the minimum required while the recommended is at least 1.4 Ghz.
I was just wondering how your performance was if your computer was anywhere close to mine.

I'm running a 1.4 GHZ Athlon, GeForce 4 Ti4200, and 768 megs of ram and I can run the game pretty well at 1024x768 with almost all the settings turned up (no AA, using trilinear filtering). I'm not sure of my exact framerate, but I imagine that you'd get reasonable performance at the minimum specs... :hmm:
Maybe you should check around gaming forums and see if there are any other people with your system who have tried it.

i just got this today and played the whole game :P im a "play it till i finish ignore the world" type gamer
must say i found it fun and entertaining.. i like the way they continued the graphic novel approach with the great music and sounds... i agree it seems really polished and complete..
does the sniper rifle still do the bullet camera thing? cause it didnt do it once for me ..
also when i watched the gameplay movies i feared that bullet time spin around thinking it would get annoying.. im really glad that it only does that if you reload in bullet time.. cause this way its a refresher and isnt like.. ok he spinning again.. but you can control if you want to have that happen....
there are some levels that are really cool and "different settings" than a usual game.. im a big fan of the dream levels too.. those are just cool..
some nice humorus bits in the game too which were cool...
also the box and packaging are really cool and unique
**one thing >> what button takes a screenshot??**
NIKODEMUS - check the HELP file. you have to run it with a command line option.
got it yesterday. on a DELL P4 1.3ghz, with 512mb RDRAM, and a GeForce4 ti4400 (128mb), it's running at 1280x1024 with all the effects maxxed out, except for the bump mapping. decent.
however, the friggin' BULLET TIME won't work. i checked the help files, which said it wouldn't with 20.x or 30.x drivers, but i'm running 40.19. sucks.
the dream sequence effect is excellent - damn near makes me dizzy.

well i must admit, this is a game that drove me to getting a new pc. my old one is a p3 866 and max payne 2 did play on it (gforce3 ti500, 512megs pc133 ram). it played fine in game but there were a few hiccups with the blurry dreamy effects. and that was at 800x600@32 res. so it should play well enough on a GHz machine. just some of the in game cinematics might be a little choppy. plays beautifully on my p4 2.8 with hyperthreading that i just love so much now :)

While the game looks great it only has like 6 hours of game play. I think it's even shorter then original one. $50 down the drain :(

10-21-2003, 05:14 PM
Yeah, because regardless of how good a game is, if they don't stretch it out over 500 hours it's not worth playing.

Spankspeople, I think your comment was out of place.
Using your words: regardless of how good graphics are, if they don't make game play long enough, it's not worth paying that kind of money. Because if I wanted to watch cut scenes, I'd rather go to the movie for $5-$8. If I want to read comics, I go buy comics.

Well, I bet that translates to an easy 60 hours for me :). So what you're trying to say is that even if a game had the greatest graphics, the best gameplay and the most entertaining story ever, if it wasn't long it would suck copious amounts of ass?
Excuse me. I have to go to the store. I've run out of grade F juice. It tastes like shit, but I can get ten times as much for what I'd be paying for the good stuff!

I personally got 10 hours of gameplay out of it at least before I beat it, and now I'm playing through it again on higher difficulty using only pistols, grenades, and sniper rifles. Like people say, it's not a game to BEAT, it's a game to PLAY.
More gameplay time isn't always better (Halo), and true, too little can be disappointing. However, I'm happy with Max Payne 2's singleplayer. Besides, just wait for the mod tools this week, and then you can build your own levels. I'm going to make one huge Rube Goldberg machine. :D

I grew up playing Resident Evil games... anything that's too long to beat not because of the difficulty, but because it's just long usually loses my interest fairly quickly.
Ran through Silent Hill 3 in an hour and a half the other day from start to finish, and it's still one of my favourite current games.

I haven't finished a single PC game except Max Payne and UT2K3. Been working on Starcraft, Warcraft III, Red Faction, HL, and MOHAA for what seems like forever...
I've been making a lot of progress in RS3 since i got it yesterday, having completed something like 5 missions and gotten two bronzes and a silver. Just something about the RS games that make 'em zip by in the beginning, then I get stuck on the second to last level, drop the game for a few months, then pick it up and ace the last two levels.
so you're saying, if a game had one level that would be OK, as long as it looked good?
Spankspeople
10-22-2003, 09:18 PM
Obviously not, since that wasn't my argument in the first place.
I'm just saying that quantity does NOT equal quality.
What YOU seem to be trying to say is that even if the game has no graphics, terrible gameplay and no redeeming plot, as long as it takes a long time to finish it's okay?
Again, obviously not.
actually, i didn't say anything one way or the other until my last post, but i don't think that expecting at least 30 hours of play for $50 is asking too much. and i don't want to see 1999 graphics in a 2003 game. obviously some people are better at games than others, and can burn thru a game in a third of the time it takes me, so length is relative. but if you give any company an inch, they will take a mile, and i dont want to see games with 5 levels become the norm.

My buddy played the game ALL weekend and only got through the first two levels, he said he was having a great time. I think I'm gonna pick it up. I suck at video games, so it'll take me a long time to get through, and I'll enjoy the hell out of it.
-Kol.
OK, so it was bad enough the bullet-time wouldn't work (even tho the dream sequences play ok, and the slo-mo death scenes play ok, i got to get updated drivers just for the bullet-time???).
i played for a couple hours saturday, then stopped to work on a word document, went back, and now it won't friggin' work. get some BS message about 'xobjectsomething-or-other.dll'. WTF is up with this? am i going to have to reinstall the thing every time i work on a document?
i like the game, got 8 hours out of it so far, and i'm still in part 1, but if i had bought it anywhere other than BEST BUY, i'd be taking it back.

Great game! I am using a AMD 733 with a geForce 2 32mb video card and 512mb ram. And even running at medium settings the game runs well. I cant get all the fancy stuff but I'm not getting much chop, so I'm satisfied. I think it was a bit short (Beat it the day after I got it). But damn was it fun. I think it was worth the price. The funhouse levels were great. And I found a new best friend in the MP5.
I can't wait for the level editor to come out. Anybody know when it's being released?

Funny, I haven't had any problems with Bullet Time...
If your card can't handle it, you can always turn off the fancy effects you know.

i think its yer pc man. maybe even mouse.
if things stop working just like that its a sign that things arent too hot, and the game shouldnt be to blame.. because it works fine on everyone elses pc.
also. since bullet-time isnt only a graphic detail.. ( its not a result of any directx goodness.. but game code as well... ) i think it might be your controls that are screwy.. maybe your right click button isnt working inside the game?
maybe try to remap the buttons? try adding it to a keyboard button maybe?
( unless im completely mis-interpreting what you said )
the help file says that bullet-time won't work with older drivers, even tho the rest of the game runs fine - the screen just turns a solid color until you turn BT back off. a friend of mine is downloading new drivers for me, so that should take care of that issue.
the thing that gets me is the word document problem - it basically killed the game. i could get to the load screen, but it crashed out trying to load a level. all my other games still work OK. no mouse problems. could be a bad spot on the harddrive where the .dll is, and since i need a bigger one anyways, i'm going to put in a new one and see if it happens again - just hope my save games aren't corrupt.

They were released a few days ago, here's a link to a forum post on the 3D Realms site. (http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/showflat.php?Cat=&Number=385323&page=0&view=collapsed&sb=5&o=93&fpart=1&vc=1)
To learn how to use them, I'd recommend starting to tutorials for the original editor (http://www.3drealms.com/max/tutorials/MaxED/index.html), and checking out some tips for the new one. (http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/showflat.php?Cat=&Number=385579&page=0&view=collapsed&sb=5&o=93&fpart=1&vc=1)
I haven't gotten a lot of time to play around with it, but I was able to learn the basics in about 2 to 3 hours and have some fun. Making an entire lincoln log type structure out of HAVOK objects and then collapsing it is cool.

download the patch. they released a 1.01 or 1.1 or something patch that is supposed to address that issue. i haven't had the game crash but i have had some weird errors with my video card (crappy ati 9200 POS) where max payne just disappears completely but the level and his shadow remain. weird and annoying. hoping the patch will somehow fix that problem too but i fear it's just those crappy ass ati drivers (i miss my geforce). i'll probably end up pulling the ati card that came with my new system and buying a geforce. but anyways, back to your problem, i don't think the word document had anything to do with the crash. they mention in the patch details that it is supposed to fix crashes that occured when trying to load certain levels.

Max Payne 2: The Fall of Max Payne Patch v1.01
Version 1.01 Changes:
Fixed game crashing to "Exception: Bad Allocation" on Windows 98/Me during loading of certain levels. This may potentially fix other crashes as well.
Improved loading times on low-end computers.
Improved Technical Support Tool to include CD-ROM Model.
thanks WRAITH - can't get to game sites from here - !@#$%& proxy - but i've got a friend who downloads patches and stuff for me. between this and the video drivers, i may yet see THE FALL OF MAX PAYNE.
