To all you CG fanatics out there!

Im releasing nDo, my normal map creation toolkit for Photoshop (CS2-CS5, Windows & Mac). Thanks to my colleague Philip Klevestav (http://www.philipk.net/) who took the time to write an extensive tutorial for it, it will (after having collected dust for a year) finally be released to the public. For free!

What is this nDo thing?
Introducing a toolset for quickly designing normal maps without ever leaving Photoshop, nDo is a melting pot of normal creation techniques. Sculpt using your custom brushes, create volumes from selections, paths or layers, apply filters, generate complexly multifaceted normal maps from height or photographs, rotate and transform without biasing normal nDo is designed to cover many of your normal mapping needs in a to-the-point format. 7,000 artists are currently using nDo!

Thanks Teddy! It was a huge help during comicon this year. I liked not having to move into another program just to do simple overlays.

nice one dude! but, running this conversion through a nuke script will take less time. and if you have an image sequence, you can run it on a render farm.
anyway, great job!

Cheers

I'm glad you like it! :) Make sure you get the latest version -- with the latest release of nDo, normal creation is much faster. Output file size and memory usage has also been drastically reduced -- by 75%.

Get the latest version here (http://cgted.com/nDo.zip)!

Impossible to visit your website, Silverlight crashes on three browsers, even after deinstalling and reinstalling the plugin... :(
Edit: even IE crashed when closing the tab..

I used to have the same problem with Silverlight. It always crashed no matter what browser I used. It turned out that it was (still is?) some bug in Silverlight that didn't like the fact that I had Tablet PC Input Service disabled. After I enabled this service, problems went away. This might also be the cause of your crashes.

Is there any chance you might work on a version for GIMP or any other open source image editing software? I can only think of one available for GIMP, which is far from comprehensive. I think there's one for Paint.NET as well, but probably overly simplistic.

I don't have or intend to get Photoshop, so +1 for Gimp version.

jakeh14 and CG_Tiger,

I'm afraid nDo relies heavily on many features only available in Photoshop. There are no currenty plans for a GIMP version as the major technical differences of this tool makes porting impossible.

Handy update this time! This one concerns converting photos to normals using customizable presets, such as skin, fur, rock etc. A few "one-click" examples:

Using photo preset "Full spectrum":

Using photo preset "Fur":

Feel free to make your own presets and spread them around!

I'm not at home at the moment, so I don't recall the specific text, but when I try to use nDo, I get an error message and the tool fails.

Any ideas what the cause might be? I am running CS2.

I'll get the specific error message tonight.

anoon,

Thanks for reporting. Can you confirm that you still get this error with the latest version of nDo (download here (http://cgted.com/nDo.zip))? I fixed this CS2 specific error in a recent release.

I do not have the latest version. I will check out tonight when again at home.

Sorry if this ends up wasting your time. My fault.

I tried with photoshop CS5 but nothing seems to work
I used the photo from the tutorial at philipk.net but when I ran the script there's only a blueish
image.
As you posted in your site I also tried to delete my preferences but nothing changed

I know I did something wrong ( I cannot be the only one not using this script :wip: )

thanks for your help

I found now that the PLANE solid color layer is put at the top of the normal element folder.
if I put it as the bottom layer everything look right ( like in the tutorial )
the problem is I cannot change any settings cause with the UI open all I see is a monochromatic image

is there something wrong?

egon569,

Big thanks for the report. I can't seem to reproduce this error, but I have uploaded a new version (download here (http://cgted.com/nDo.zip)) which might solve the issue you are experiencing.

Please let me know how this works out for you!

I am getting this error after I run the action. - TypeError: Undefined is not an object.

It does create a folder with two layers in it then a blank white document that is selected.

I am using Mac os 10.5.8 with photoshop CS2.

I followed the instructions closely and purged my PS preferences.

Please help!
