I was modeling a human in Maya 5.0 and it came to me that the poly tools were good, yet hard to get to through several menus.

Assuming I am not very good at MEL scripting my own custom UI, is there a Meshtools-like equivelant for download somewhere, so that tools such as Extrude Face, Split Poly, and so on are readily available on a Shelf, only one click away?

Awesome! holy crap that's cool, I wonder - how much of a performance difference will there be between this and subDs? I know that poly verts hold less data than subDs, so it should be pretty good... Can't wait to use this on my next character!

If u just wanted the tools on a shelf you could just make a new shelf and then hold control+alt+shift and select the menu items that you want. It will appear as a shelf button. Or make marking menu's for your tools.

MJPolyTools is almost exactly like Meshtools. He even has a version for Max:
