View Full Version : How to copy a particle emitter exactly?
wedge 05-29-2002, 08:15 PM I'm trying to make dust behind the two engines of the podracer. I attached a particle emitter a short distance behind one engine and got the dust to look the way I wanted. I tried to copy the emitter and put it behind the second engine, but it does not emit particles... how is it possible to duplicate a particle emitter exactly? I tried both copy and instance and parent, world, etc...

you actually don't need to duplicate the particles too :)
just select your particles that you've created and shift select the new emitter that you've duplicated and hit particles-use selected emitter.
now both emitters spit out the same particles. thats good, because to change the effect of the particles you only need to change one :)

okay.... it looks great... now how would I make the particles start out very tiny, then get bigger with age? also, can I make them fade away instead of just dying?

fade away :
select the particles, and go to the AE. in the folder add dynamic attributes hit the opacity button and select per particle attribute. then in the folder above a new attribute for opacityPP is added. right click and choose create ramp. then again right click and select edit ramp. read the ramp this way : on the bottom of the ramp the particle is born and at the top of the ramp the particle dies. the color adjusts the opacity. so black is full visible and white is invisible. you may also adjust the lifespann attributes. so have a lifespann (whatever it may be) for the particles and the ramp has somethign as an input.
for the size : what kind of particles do you have ?
generally. hit the generall button in the add dynamic attribures, go to the particles tab and select radiusPP. then its the same like with the opacity. right click, create a ramp and read it the same way. at the bottom the particle is born and the color (the value actually) is determining the radius (black is zero) at the top the particle dies and again the value of color gives the size.

hehe... silly me... the lifetime of the particles was set to 20, so after 20 frames it all restarts.... fixed now!
