View Full Version : Here`s a question about anime hair

Well, I`m starting on my first anime type character (actually second, but the first one sucked too bad to even be called a model) and I was just wondering..

How the hell do you get hair like this? (Not just mesh, but animation also, like the hair blowing in the wind)

I dont think the actual hair mesh would be too hard, but what would be the best way to do it? And as for the animation.. I don`t even know where to begin. I tried the wind modifier but that only works on particle systems, not mesh.

Anyway, any ideas and suggestions greatly appreciated.

maybe a flex modifier will do the trick. Here you can add forces like wind and gravity.

Thanks, I`ll give that a shot

I did a gas pump and figured out a trick
that worked well for it. I did the hose
as a loft. Put a linked xform
modifier on the vertex at the end of
the path. Link to a dummy object and
you can pull the hose around using
the dummy. That would let you move
the hair around nicely. Perhaps in
combination with the flex modifier
Tim suggested.

Use soft selection on the tips of the hair, falling off towards the scalp. Then apply flex. Works great after tweaking the flex parameters a bit.

Why is soft selection any better than
setting up a dummy to move the
hair around?

2 Reasons:

1) Flex wouldn't work with a dummy object... Flex works on sub-objects.

2) The reason for soft-selection - because you don't want the entire bulk of hair to move in a uniform manner. When you shake your head, the ends of the strands move more than the roots. In addition, if you've got 10-20 strands of hair it's going to be far more efficient to use soft/flex than to control 20 dummy objects (at least IMHO).

Ah. Thanks! The loft control thing
worked really well for the hose.
Since it was linked to the end of
a bezier spline it moved pretty naturally.
I've just started using the new version
of Max. There's a LOT to learn.

BTW Uzik - your technique for hose control was spot-on, though. :)
