I saw an Escher-esque poster online the other day and thought it might be an interesting challenge to recreate it in 3D. So, here is my version.

http://webpages.charter.net/openletter/perspective02.jpg

I'm having an issue with Radiosity and Exlusion. It seems that even if a piece of geometry is excluded from the influence of a light (or sunlight in this instance), it is still affected by bouncing light. Which is why the bottom portion of the image is brighter than it should be (it's most noticable under the arched step on the lower right - it should be shadowed). There are two pieces to the mesh, and each piece has it's own exclusive sunlight. Any ideas on how I can make sure the mesh isn't affected by the bouncing light from a light that shouldn't be affecting it?

Things to come:
- Textures
- Tweaked geometry
- Tweaked lighting
- Lens effect (to distort perspective on the top and bottom)

Comments? Critiques?

Looks nice, even with the issues you're having with radiosity. I'm a huge Escher fan, and I always love seeing his work come to life in 3d. :)

A bit of an update. Here is a render of the window detail I just added. I made a mistake and made my glass material 2-sided so the reflections are doubled ... which incidently, took a freaking LONG time to render. :banghead:

Keep the comments and critiques coming, they keep me inspired.

Can anyone suggest how I would go about getting that vaseline lens type of effect in my renders? I want the bright parts of the image, where the light hits a surface to glow slightly ... I've seen the effect in some of 3DS Max's example images that come with the install and can't figure out how it's done ...

... anyone?

Well, I couldn't find out how to do it in Max, so I just used Photoshop. Here is what I did:

1) Open rendered image in Photoshop
2) Duplicate the image on a new layer
3) Gaussian Blur the heck out of if (5-10 pixels)
4) Change the layer to Linear Dodge

... and PRESTO, CHANGO ...

There's a little bit of banding, but I'm sure that's something that can be tweaked.
