"What are friends for?" is a personal 6 minute short film.

My name is Darren Oakes, for the last 10 years I have worked as an animation generalist. I work in both CG and digital hand drawn, the majority of my work is character based. Examples of which can be viewed here www.darrenoakes.co.uk (http://www.darrenoakes.co.uk). Over the last 4 years I have been developing and slowly producing a 6 minute short film. Although I have persevered with this on my own over this time. That was never really my intention, people have been involved in the past. Yet all have found it difficult to give up there personal time, which is understandable.

I have no funding for this which is one of the reasons I have tried to carry on with this on my own. I could really do with some help to get this into animation production. I have done all the story development, character design, development and art direction so pre production has been finished for the last year or so.During the last year I have done the 2 character models, I have modelled all the sets and done all the development for the look of the film.

The area I need the most help with is on the technical side of the characters. I have some knowledge of rigging and facial setup due to the commercials I have worked on and produced. I understand this is probably the most difficult area to get people involved but I really need some help. There are 4 characters in the film although 3 share the same rig there are only 2 unique rigs to create. I have an autorig for the body that, with the tests I have done, would be usable for my characters. I basically need a Maya technical artist/rigger with some knowledge of facial setup and character deformation to get the characters ready for animation either using the autorig or a rig created for the characters. I would also be interested in speaking to texture artists who would be able to help out. I am not looking for animators for this project.

All I can offer in return is credit for the work done. Hopefully the examples above are enough to intrigue people to get involved. I have a full hand drawn animatic of the film which I'd be happy to show people with serious interest in helping me out. I know this is'nt the busiest part of the forum but if I don't put this out there it may take me forever to get this finished.

Thanks for taking the time to look.

Very nice Darren .

Well done in putting the story first !

It looks like you have put in a lot of work .

Put the hand drawn animatic up , it sounds like a big ace to play & might get you your team.

I understand how long someone works on something without help & without wanting to bother other artists to lend their own time to help.

Best of luck.

( also we got our cool rigger by posting in the rigger section of maya rigging and linking that to our collab thread , try that ! You might get what you need )

Wow, Darren, you have serious persistence to come this far at that quality level....it looks like this is something really special. Thrilled to see you open it up and post here!

It's not my customary genre, but there's a flair that is unmistakable in the assets you've shown.

Check out Mike's project HERE (http://forums.cgsociety.org/showthread.php?p=6704576#post6704576) post #93 he shows the facial rig they are using...not sure if he is open to sharing it, but it's a pro rig by a pro animator (Mike). It would seem a perfect fit for your characters!

Thanks to you both for the kind words. I'm a little reluctant to put
the animatic up, although I'm sure your right Darran. I believe the
face rig is the face machine. I don't have any budget for that right
now.

Even so I'd still like to find a couple of people just to help ease the
workload. It's been such a huge amount of work to get it this far
I can't work on it all the time due to work commitments. Having
some help would just keep it moving forward.

I may be cheeky and put a post in the rigging forum.

Thanks again!

Face Machine? sorry for that...thought Mike did a custom setup...my lack of Maya animation tools showing. :banghead:

Re: rig help, I was gonna suggest you post at the 11second club forum, but I see you already did. :)

We use Face Machine. We've customized the entire rig a lot beyond what you get out of the can, but essentially I knew recruiting for TDs and keeping the work solid and consistent would be very hard so I figured the purchase price for Face Machine would pay for itself in man hours, and I was right. Easily the best money I've spent on the project so far, along with possibly the cost of the social network itself, but there are more options available today for how to do that.
