View Full Version : A good sollution how to make rain with particles?
rsalonen 05-29-2002, 07:18 PM Does anyone here have a good way of making good looking rain with particles, I know I can use Paint FX, but I want to learn how to make it with Particles.
Should I make them emit from a NURBS plane or something, since I can make it the size of the sky...or some other way?
Would be really good to add a Wind effect to it too (with Air I guess?)
Okay I'm really newbie when it comes to dynamics, but hey, you have to start somewhere =)

could be a good start with the plane. just use the emit from object command. then i would suggest to use streak mode particles as the render type. a wind field and a little turbulence one will be all that you need then. ahh forget. a gravity off course too :) .
maybe at the end a particle collision event then the particles hit the ground so the spread out to a few tiny particles.
shall i make an example ?

Thanks svenip
I have started some with the plane, and I added the air with wind field, but it doesn't react, how comes?
And also, the rain falls very, ummm, flat and in a straight boring line...doesn't really look like rain, more like the matrix text falling down :p
yes and example would be really great!
If you got time of course

so, here's a fast example. if you don't find out how it worx then i give you an "in depth explain" :)

thank you very much svenip
This is pretty much the effect I want to make
So I will try to re-create what you just done so I learn it.
Will do it tommorrow thou.
But I got one question for you now, how to make the particles stop at the plane (or any surface)
In your example the fall through...
EDIT: oh sorry, it's not the first particles which go through, it's the ones that emits at the ground

select the ground and then particles-make collide. but that's unfortunately that's not all. you then need to go to windows-relationship editors-dynamic relationships and assign the groudn object as a collision for the particles (simply select in the left field the particles, click the collide radio button, and then click the ground surface on the right side)

Ah, thanks for the help about the colide, I already knew how to do that, I just had forgoten, it was a while.
Well, I now got a question for you rearding your example file
How do you get the rain to actually move away from the emited plane...when I do it it looks more like it's stucked there and moves very slowly down.
Also I checked your settings and found Event Valid[0], Event Count[0] etc
I do not have these Event atributes, what do they do and where did they came from?

if you have added Air and you whant the particles to slide of the plane? play with the GeoConnector, select the colliding plane and hit ctrl-a play around with the 'tessellation factor' 'resilience' and friction., also if you think there are to little influence on the particle from the Air īset the max distance to a higher number.,

i've added a particle collision event. simply select your particles and in the particle menu click the event menu button. then you can assign what should happen then the particles collide. i selected split.

Thank you very much guys for you help
Now I have started to understand more about particles, fields and collision events.
I wonder how this will work in my big scene...
well I will play around with it.
Thanks!

after hours of fiddling i need to resurrect this thread. i'm trying to let it rain on my maya city, everythings fine so far, i did it as described (emit from surface -> direction -y etc) but i can't change the "density" of the rain, no matter how big my nurbs plane is, i only get 4*4 streaks of rain and that's definitely not enough. this might be in TFM, if so i'm sorry but could use every hint to find it ...
thanks,
jwm
