View Full Version : Vehicle: Underwater ship for independent game
oracrest 10-04-2003, 08:21 AM Here is a WIP model and texture for an independent game. Please crit. This is one of the first textures that I've done, but I think it's coming along. Lemme know what you like/dislike.

That is a great looking model oracrest . I love the whole ship design , but somehow it lacks of realism . Try playing a littlle bit with metal texture and give the ship some skretches and dirt . It will help you incresing realism . I would also make the engine glow more bright . Othervise great job .

That is great, however with the quality of the metal and the rendering of the textures, the thrusters and the blast shield leave something to be desired. Great job those are my only crits. -J

I think its a very good job, the vehicle is simple but appealing and it is well textured with a great use of colour in particular. It looks like some Mars desert camo paint. A nice semi-cartoon feel to the presentation. I assume the exhausts will be covered by game engine particle effects?

yeah I also like the design.
Like the others said, give the texture more edge, make it look metallic and not like a homeworld spaceship :)

Heres a more used version of the ship, not so much sometihng off the assembly line. Thanks for all the crits. Keep em coming... The other ship is another one that I did for the same army (hence the matching color). Lemme know what you think.

think about even adding some lub streaks and a few (sparing) deep marks on the paint job exposing shinny metal, slight gash or slit from rocks or what not
the glass is very far from as good as the rest .. needs alot more work..
maybe paint the reflection of the metal edgeing not as white, obviously, but as a mixture of the blue and tan. get some color bouncing between the metal and the glass too.
paint the reflection of the ship into the glass.. just use a seperate layer of the ship and put it into the glass and fade it off linearly, should look cool
you know maybe make the cockpit a 50% transperant piece and model a blocky interior (25 polys) with HAZY texture (ie 100 blury pixals, but enough to think there are buttons, gizmos, and people with lights on inside?
maybe this thing should also have one small super bright head light?
i absolutely LOVE the shielded one, i think its better and the idea behind a ship that doesnt use glass viewing seems cool... all sensor style with holographic VR headset piloting gear... :)
i bet this stuff would look KICK butt with some excellent cel shading technique

hey, nice design.
you know what I would do? 2 thing:
first, pick up those turbines, and rotate the vertexes and each height segment, so it would'n look so faceted.
see the atachment.
the sencond ideia woulde be: since you have souce a small conection with the back of the model, maybe that conection could be rotational! and the front could rotate up and down, for extra steering... or what ever you call it...
ok, other that that it looks good. execpt for the motal parts, which could use some contrast , or envmap.
ok, going now

kazuya, thanks for the crits, and for that modeling trick also. I am pretty much done with these ships as far as modeling goes, but i still am going to take your guys input into future things i do. I really appreciate it.
Im thinking of throwing some barnacles onto the ships, what do you think?

somebody correct me if i'm wrong, but i think barnacles only grow/live on non-moving objects. maybe if you add hints of algae here and there, and maybe rust at places where metal is scratched/exposed ... salt water sure does corrode.

Some species of barnacles will actually attatch themselves to sea turtles, or whales.

If it helps i think barnicales attach themselves to ships as well...at least i think so anyway. I'm pretty sure they attach themselves to anything submerged pretty much all the time.

all this discussion about barnacles only brings back memories of pain. Growing up near the ocean, I have fallen more than a few times upon a slimy beach rock with nothing to stop me from sliding off but the flesh tearing colony of barnacles. but anyway!....
I believe that barnacles do in fact attach to moving things. If not, I guess I could go with the excuse that they attach when the ship is docked or not moving. I do agree that it needs some dirt and grime and all. I am still trying to figure out how i want to add it, I'm still somewhat of a newbie when it comes to photoshop....
Another thing I have been trying to keep in mind is not to make things too worn, for if the ship was new out of the factory, it would look like someone beat the shit out of it :) But I guess that really a minor detail.....I agree! dirt and grime, comin right up.....

ok, heres the next ship Im texturing (heh, if you didnt notice, I have a habit of almost finishing one model and texture before I start the next. Ill probably dirty and "barnacle-ate" the ships all at the same time later). I wanted to post this one at a more early stage, so that I could use your guys feedback, and maybe provide a more step by step process. Lemme know what you think.

Cool stuff matt i still think you should work on smoothing out some of the normals into groups i think it would give you more of a paneled metal feel and would be less faceted. Also try baking out some brownian textures for or maybe even lighting to give you some smoother gradations of color and value. good work

added some paneling details, and more defined the cockpit.....

ok, added some dirt and grim, mainly on just the orange areas so far, still planning to add more grime on the grey areas, give it some paint chips, and highlighting/shadow.

The colour of the cockpit looks a little similar to the colour on the intakes (?). It's a little confusing when I first look at it. Otherwise, pretty cool!
A little reminiscent of Homeworld?

Its looking very nice and in character with the rest of the ships although I don't think this one sports the same crispness as the earlier models. The geometry is there I think my perceived problem is in the texturing.

heh heh, like the style, middle one is the best
I like the asymetric design

thank
Dodd- as far as its crispiness, its because I tried to make this one look more grimy and dirty, but i dont know if it looks TOO dirty. Also, this one is rendered out in a darker light, maybe that has something to do with it?

i really like the model and how you've progressed :). almost reminds me of one of the ships you encounter in Armada for the dreamcast.
btw. I went to your website and notice that you also did a art test for Stainless Steel Studios, did u get a response from them about that? I got the usual, looks good, no industry experience :(

Hirigashi- yeah, i got a response from them saying that they would like to consider me for the position, so i sent them my resume, that was over a month ago, and about a week ago, they said that they recognized me as a talented artist, but didnt have a position for me (a friendly rejection :) It probably also had to do with the fact that I am a MAYA person, and dont know MAX that well. I think they are a MAX company. But i admit that my texture is pretty weak for that one. It was when i was back home, i didnt have internet access, and only a mouse, and i was still kinda learning photoshop. But now that Ive done it, i have been noticing that ship everywhere on people's sites, they must get a lot of submissions.

The concept art looks excellent and the geometry you have at the moment looks very faithful to that artwork, this one looks like a very good design.

well those kind of scratches would be cool for a spaceship, but think about it, they're basically from weathering, and underwater it really doesn't happen that way. I think maybe you should have more rust in there, it'll make these ships look like ships from under the water instead of outerspace.
