View Full Version : 2 problems, slow downs, and where do I paint?

I have a UV map for a head, but it is only half of the head (it's the only way I managed to do it, or else I would get the face on the right and the back of the head on the left side of the UV map). Anyway, I made the texture 2000 x 2000, but maybe it's too much. Regardless, my 1ghz P4 slows down when I paint in Photoshop with a large brush (to get different color tones across the face). Maybe the file is too large?

The other problem is, how do I know where I am painting? It's not like I get a live feedback as to what it looks like on my model. Do I have to sketch the texture first to make sure it is all placed properly, then paint the details?

Why is it that I'm doing everything differently than the tutorials have shown and always get different results when I do what they say?

:annoyed:

Hello,
first off you are probably getting slow feedback from your comp because of your texture size. It takes alot or ram to run big textures on your machine. And if your uvs are only half of the head maybe try and do a smaller texture, I am asuming you are using mirroed uvs for it.

As for knowing where you are painting, well in maya whcihc is what i use, there is an option in the v editor that when you select your model, you can export your uv layout to a picture file like a jpg. It is called uv snapshot. I dont know hwo to in other programs I have a friend who uses max, and he usauly just enlarges his uve editopr window as large as he can and then takes a screen capture of it.

So once you have the file take it into photoshop or whatever and place it on the top layer of your color map you are making. The uv snapshots i get are always black and white, so i just make the layer a mutiply layer so that i can see through the white and not the black and all i see is my uvs. now you will know where you are painting. and now texture as you wish and save often and check out how it loks omn your model.

I hope this helped and answered some questions. peace

Yes I have now reduced the image size by half, it solved my problems and I think it was too big before.

I took a snapshot with the print screen key, but should have used the unwrap.p (for Lightwave) to do exactly what you said. Next time I will:) Soon I will post a picture of the progress of the head in the WIPs section. Thanks!
