slice56 10-04-2003, 06:04 AM here is a new car i have completely finished up to the interior (which is next ;)). Please let me know what you think. The polycount on it is 3296 tris including the wheels. Thanks!

looks like a lot of work went it to it. Nice.
I think you could spare 1000+ polys for the wheels, so they can be 3d.

hehe, do the wheels look that bad? be honest :)

they look ok, its just that they are flat :-P
man, how did u render that, what texture did you use? i really want to be able to make renders and textures like that

wow looks real good! The render is just awesome!
Now all you need is a nice interior, and mabye you can put that badboy into Gta 3.
I'm also wondering how u got a render like that.

thanks guys! I modeled in maya with polys, and i rendered in maya with mental ray. I am creating a tutorial for modeling a low poly car (this one), and I will be going thru modeling, texturing, and rendering it. Should be finished within a couple weeks. Been really busy lately with the new job, so it might take some time heh. Hey Turk, hows OC going? I am on the team as well, just been inactive for a little while. The cars on the site are my models ;) I have always loved your character models man, they are so clean.

I just updated the renders at the top of the page. I decided to model the wheels instead of just use a flat plane. So, now the count on the car is: 3,980 triangles
Whatcha guys think?!!

looks really great man, any chance of us seeing a wire, keep it up.
also looking foward to the tut, especially the texturing and rendering in mental ray

Slice, seriously.... you have seen my cars, are they good enough to find a job? Congratulations on your new job BTW.

Slice thats perfect! Mabye some disk brakes would top it off.
I also can't wait for the tutorial!
And RmachucaA your cars are amazing! I'm pretty sure you'll land a job!

I have a question.
Where did you get the blueprints for the mustang?
slice56
10-07-2003, 04:19 AM
I used some front and side images i found off the net :) no blueprints

ok, heres a (probably dumb, feel free to laugh) question...
the vertices i circled in green...i thought this was a bad thing...to have it "laying" on another surface but not actually welded to another vertex in that area...
Is it acceptable, especially for games, to do that every once in a while, this is what caused me a few hours of trying in vein to fix...and i gave up on the model cause i was getting mesh problems anyway i could figure to match the other virtices....
I know its a dumb noob question...but im just trying to sort this stuff out..

roosterjm, the way i do some times is i separate the fender, so the shading wont mess the contour up, so in actuality, the fender and the body are 2 separate pieces, so where you think that vertex is joined in the middle of an edge, its actually not since its another object. I hope this clears some of your doubts.
And no, its not a noob question, just a few weeks ago i figured that out.

so is it pretty much safe with most game engines today that that wouldn't cause z-buffer issues?
i think my first venture into game insertion will be into gta3...then im going to try going for Racer (wanna make my real car, 2002 mercury cougar)
anywho...thanks...
RmachucaA
10-07-2003, 08:27 AM
ok, what i failed to mention is that you merge thos 2 objects at the end, but not physicaly so to speak, so no welding is going on.
I doubt it will have any probs. whatsoever.
slice56
10-07-2003, 05:53 PM
it is fine to not merge those verts if you dont have to. It all depends on the place it is. If it were on a place that was very rounded and you could see a noticable shading error, then yes, you might want to fix it. But, as long as they are all flowing in the same direction, then you should be fine. I exported this car into PS2 to test it out, and it ran just fine :)

see, i was totally mistaken as to what slice56 did, so i guess that proves im still a noob :-(
Anyways, did you import into GT3?

I have to say that is one well modelled car! A very cool car too. I like the modelled rims better then just a flat texture.
What will be the estimated texture size? Will you bake the texture with the lighting setup youve got now?
slice56
10-07-2003, 09:36 PM
doesnt show your a noob. just shows you learned something :) this field is all about learning :) and nah, not gta3. i put it in a game we are working on now ;)
no, this is the final texture. the body will jsut get a plain ole phone shader like the one on here now. it is the headlights, tail lights, and interior soon :) the texture size is 512x512 :) thanks!

so what roosterjim mentioned doesn't cause Z-Buffer issues? I'm a little confused. (My programmer friend isn't around to explain things, either.)

great .
seems to be very respectful of the real one.
i've done my own but in high res version already.
good work. the under hood ''ford'' is strange.

hehe, yeah, that wasnt originally there, but i thought i would throw it in just so it filled up the large black area on the bottom of the hood. Oh well, I might take it off if you think it is sticking out like a sore thumb. Anyone else think it shouldnt be there?
RmachucaA
10-08-2003, 02:55 AM
its fine.
roosterjm2002
10-08-2003, 05:36 AM
I'd leave it there...i know that even on the 2003 mustang cobras there is no heat sheild on the underside of the hood...ford stopped putting them in most cars...but if you get a factory roush stang it does have a heat sheild and it has both the ford logo and the roush racing logos...
Its a performance thing, i like it...racey without being ricey
slice56
10-08-2003, 07:12 AM
yeah, thats mainly the reason why i put it there. i knew it was something that alot of ford owners that customize their cars, expecially tbirds and mustangs, put that logo under their hood. I thought that doing that to this car might add a little more smile to their face when they see it :)
