View Full Version : applying layered texture to object, crashes every time

hi, every time i try to apply a layered texture (even a simple one with just one layer) to my subd object, Maya crashes upon trying to render (using mental ray). My bottle has thickness (as in it has a hollow centre), I've noticed it works fine on non-hollow objects (where the mesh doesn't don't go 'inside itself' if that makes sense...)

When I apply the layered texture the object has a weird culling effect in the viewport, and attempting to render (in mental ray) crashes just crashes Maya. I'm pretty sure the crashing is due to the object having an inside.

I'm stumped, is this a bug in Maya? I'm hoping it's something simple, I'm new to Maya and I can't find any solution anywhere, surely a lot of people have run into this?

here's a simple shape with an inside:

here i've applied a layered shader with just one layer on it:

(and it crashes when using mental ray)
