View Full Version : xpresso in an xref embedded .c4d file
protoscape 10-03-2010, 01:06 AM I have a scene using xpresso that is working fine by itself, but when i put that scene in another c4d file as an xref my xpresso script stops working. I am assuming I am just missing some detail that would allow xpresso to work when embedded in an xref, but any guidance would be much appreciated.
In brief it is a spring with 2 pieces attached to the ends. I am using xpresso to attach the end pieces to a spline. And I am moving the spline by attaching it with spline wrap to another spline and animating the spline wrap's offset..
Here is a screen shoot when it is working:

here it is once embedded as an xref:

here is the source files that are giving me grief:

Is it possible to have xpresso in an xref? If so, how?
thanks

xrefs are good for referencing static meshes... and that's about it. It's unfortunate.
( haha yea that's an opinion based reply. if you could could reference actual rigs like in standard referencing systems i'd probably use them. Since you can't, i don't give them much respect or think to use them for much. I just gotta gripe because when you need to time your animation based off other animation timing, and the design is still fluid, having an animated object inside a container that is referenced doesn't really help you much.)

Animated xrefs work fine, but using nested xref documents
(xref within xref) I can't recommend.
Have a master document and load xrefs into it direct.

small update:
i've made a few other demo scenes where I can get xpresso in an xref to work for the most part. where it seems to fail is the xpresso "use deformed points" doesn't seem to work when using spline wrap.

i made a simpler scene to test an xref containing xpresso that uses "use deformed points" and it also fails.
In this example i set a sphere's position to the location of a point on a deformed spline using xpresso and the "use deformed point" property.
this is what is should look like:

this is what it looks like once its in an xref:

here's the source file.
source.zip (http://protoscape.com/temp/simpler-example-xrefproblem.zip)
Does this prove that "use deformed point" bugs out when in an xref? or am i missing some other option I could check?

Using Xrefs isnt as fubar as many say, you just have to eliminate everything simulated. If you bake it before saving its fine and very useful to distribute work.
