Any ideas how to go about it? I know I'm meant to use the vrayDirt. My scene is lit via vray's sun&sky :banghead:

here's what I currently have:

2 ways:

1- render globals->render elements->vray_extraTex, then plugin to that a vray dirt node. when you render, it will output a separate file with the dirt map.

2- render globals->render elements->raw GI (this isnt a dirt map but if youre doing "real" compositing, youre not going to drop your dirt map on top of everything as a multiplied layer)

honestly, i don't think that render you just posted needs a dirt map. that would be overkill and not quite realistic. just tune your global illum settings and contrast / color thresholds, and maybe turn on "enhance details" to get your nooks and crannies darker and sharper.

check out masterZap's post on why dirtmaps/ambient occlusion is obsolete. you can find it on google.

Yeah dude. Read his blog and you'll be on the right track. He knows his shit.

Also check out David's blog. Google 'djx blog'. Good Maya / Mental Ray / V-Ray guidance.

Good luck!

I dont think Master Zapp is really saying AO is obsolete, its a great tool for enhancing details. Its just been misinterprited and people are multiplying it over everything rather than using it just on the indirect pass.

It also doesnt help that publications such as 3d artist are recommending using this incorrect method as they have in an entire article in this months issue.
