Hey there,

Digging back into the VAULT, I unearthed the thoroughly impressive cinematic for Warhammer: Mark of Chaos, created by the crew at DIGIC Pictures. These guys have gone from strength to strength since this production but I reckon we should never bury the good work gone before.

Click the pic.

One of the all-time best cg cinematics. If they gave some insight on the animation/rigging part in the article would have been awesome.

I remember that, for me, the most iconic scene in this video, was the warrior priest shouting ''For the Empire!''...

The facial animation and momentum in all of the priest's shots, from that moment on, left me speechless... there is so much going on....most notably, the facial muscle and skin movement.

It really helped to deliver one of the best cg character dramatizations ever....very hard to pull off, on a realistic human character, even with mocap.

Thanks for the read, awesome job Digic!

You did good bringing this back... for me this is their best work ever and one of the best if not the best cinematic ever in all aspects, directing, cg, sound, you name it.

The best artwork is that after several years past still on top. This cinematic is one of that artworks, still one top nowadays! Lots of inspiration and research on it.

best,

Right on target. This is my favorite cinematic ever. The art direction is steller but so is the camera work and pacing.

Its one of my all time favs. It looks still amazing, and the animation and direction still has no or very few equals.
Just amazing.

Thanks for the kind words everyone!

It was just a very basic blendshape rig and some simple keyframe animation for the face; the rest was mocap with a lot of manual work (except for the goblins and the demon, which were completely hand animated).

Looking at those screenshots makes all this feel such a long time ago by now, we have more people, completely different tools, shorter schedules...

Yeah, still one of the greatest cinematics. But it's hard to know it is already that old and still so superior to what one person can do alone in 2010...You really did an awesome job and do it nowadays. Watched your civilization 5 intro and the quality blew me away again:D Is that all rendered in Arnold again? You guys really rule:)

Thanks everyone for the kind words! This article was a real blast from the past, brought back some memories. :)

Actually Civ5 was done almost a year ago, using mental ray. (If I recall correctly it was our last project completed with MR.)

Cheers,

Thanks for the info Tamas .... blendshapes & mocap worked really well then, I was fooled there. Thought it was much more complex because there was such subtle movement, e.g. when priest hit the ground or when he was draged over by the shadow elf.
Anyway it was good to know . All the best!

We did some jiggle on the face when he falls, but that wasn't too complex either. The cloth was fully simulated however, I think there's still a little behind the scenes info about it on the Syflex website.

Thanx will check it out ;)

This cinematic actually inspired me to make a lip-synch test almost a year later. You can view it here (http://www.vimeo.com/15557359) if you like... (download for better rez)

Have a nice day :D

The assassin at the end was immeasurably badass. Beautiful stuff thanks for the peek.
